» Key Benefits

The Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3120 represents the next generation networking solution for blade server environments. Built upon Cisco's proven hardware and IOS software, the Cisco Catalyst 3120 is engineered with unique technologies specifically designed to meet the rigors of the blade server infrastructure. Both switches are designed to deliver scaleable, high performance, highly resilient connectivity while supporting ongoing data center initiatives to reduce server infrastructure complexity, management and TCO.

With the Cisco CBS 3120 series switches, HP and Cisco introduce a technology unique to blade server enclosures that allows multiple switches to act as a single entity. This switch stacking technology takes the individual physical switches within a rack and treats them as one logical switch. This innovation is the foundation of the switches' ability to simplify operations and management. Additional IOS upgrades make the CBS 3120 extremely versatile.

What's new

Introducing the Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3120 stacking switches. Designed to meet the growing network demands of today's datacenters while dramatically reducing network complexity and management.

StackWise Technology
  • Up to nine switches combine into a single logical switch
  • Single IP address and routing domain
  • 64Gb stack bandwidth
  • Mix and match any combination of CBS 3120 series switches
Performance
  • Wirespeed switching on all sixteen 1Gb downlinks
  • Wirespeed switching on all 1Gb uplinks
  • Wirespeed switching on both 10Gb uplinks (3120X only)
  • Uses the same IOS interface, MIBs, and management tools as the rest of the Cisco Catalyst Series
Management
  • Multiple switches managed as single logical switch (single IP, single STP node etc)
  • Use CiscoWorks Software that includes multilayer feature configurations such as routing protocols, ACLs, and QoS parameters
  • Supports both Embedded Events Manager (EEM) and Generic On-line Diagnostics (GOLD)
  • Supports Cisco Network Assistant
Options
  • IP Services Upgrade License
  • 1000BASE SX Fiber SFP Module (maximum of four per switch)
  • 10Gb X2 Modules - SR/LRM/CX4 (maximum of two per 3120X switch)

Ideal environment

Ideal for...

The Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3120 series is ideal for large datacenter infrastructures where cost and complexity needs to be reduced.

  • By significantly simplifying data center design and operations, the Catalyst Blade Switch 3120 reduces infrastructure complexity, improves network resiliency and increases the operational manageability of the blade switching environment.
  • Advanced operations and troubleshooting tools reduce overall datacenter operational expenses.
  • The stacking feature of the Catalyst 3120 switches provides automated provisioning of new blade switches to allow true plug-and-play functionality

Large banking and financial services back office operations will appreciate the resiliency and capacity of the Catalyst Blade Switch 3120.

  • The Catalyst 3120 switches provide a high-speed conduit for inter-server traffic, which is especially important for financial type applications that generate increased inter-server communications.
  • Support of redundant active downlinks to the server. This provides redundant pathways and eliminates any access delay related to active/passive failover.
  • At the hardware level, the Catalyst 3120 offers full online insertion and removal (OIR), which allows switch modules to be added or removed without disrupting the fabric or impacting other switch modules.
