HP StorageWorks DC SAN Backbone Director Power Pack Switch |
| The HP StorageWorks DC SAN Backbone Director Power Pack is the most advanced B-series director-class switch and provides the backbone for evolving Storage Area Networks (SANs) in mission critical environments. It supports an intelligent, scalable, and application-centric approach to enterprise data management. It enables the merging of diverse types of networks including client/server, virtual server cluster, extension, and SANs to improve server and storage utilization, simplify management, reduce costs, and support non-disruptive growth. DC SAN Director is the highest performing director with a 6Tb backplane providing a new class of infrastructure for the data center. It improves energy efficiency by combining higher bandwidth with lower power consumption. It facilitates server and storage expansion for open and mainframe environments, delivering scalability with up to 768 ports in a dual chassis configuration. It provides investment protection for increased ROI by supporting existing and future emerging protocols, including 8 Gb/s Fibre Channel, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, FCIP, FICON, and future support for Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and iSCSI. The high-performance architecture also provides auto-speed negotiation to support legacy 1, 2, and 4 Gb/s server and storage devices for maximum flexibility. DC SAN Backbone leverages B-series FOS to centralize data center management for greater efficiency. The Power Pack set of tools monitors the network's health and performance. Power Pack also provides the foundation for integration into HP storage management tools, enabling infrastructure management through a single-pane-of-glass. Adaptive Networking (AN) provides traffic management applications which deliver application aware management of fabric resources. Adaptive Networking is a new feature of the Power Pack tools and provides a uniform, protocol agnostic way for application service levels to communicate with the SAN. For example, in virtual server environments, end-to-end communication ensures that fabric resource requirements follow the application when its virtual server moves to another physical server. Other adaptive networking services such as dynamic fabric profiles and traffic management can monitor resource use along the entire data path to detect and eliminate congestion. The new 8 Gbit/sec technology provides the ability to aggregate up to eight 8 Gb/s ports to create an Inter-Switch Link (ISL) trunk for up to an unprecedented 64 Gb/s of bandwidth. The new 10Gb fibre channel blade also provides up to 6 Fibre Channel ports for high speed SAN extension for even higher performance requirements. Extended Fabric software distance support for extended applications has been increased to support distances up to 500 kilometers depending on speed. The new director also extends the distance for data transferred through ISL Trunking which enables new levels of performance between data centers. The DC SAN Backbone Director Power Pack is designed for continuous operation and supports "five-nines" (I.e., 99.999%) availability. The director is engineered with built-in redundancy; all FRUs and components are capable of hot-swap install/de-install, and non-disruptive hardware and software upgrades concurrent with operation. Security capabilities built into the ASIC eliminate the threat of unauthorized SAN access and unauthorized SAN configuration changes which reduces the risk of downtime. The unique industry-leading capabilities position the Backbone Director Switch and the B-series product family to be the standard solution for Corporate and Enterprise SANs. The HP StorageWorks DC SAN Backbone Director Power Pack is the most advanced B-series director-class switch and provides the backbone and network foundation for evolving Storage Area Networks (SANs) in mission critical environments. The advanced design, computer power, and bandwidth allow customers to expand their existing environments and provide on-going investment protection to meet their growth and changing IT environments. |

| Software Components, Standard | |
|
Remote Switch | The Remote Switch fabric functions with the aid of a bridging device, or network bridge. The network bridge supports Fibre Channel physical interfaces, as well as secondary non-Fibre Channel FCIP physical interfaces. |
| | |
| Frame Filtering | An ASIC based capability in the 4 Gb and 8 Gb family of SAN switches that enables new applications and features. The switch has the ability to "view" the first 64-bytes of the Fibre Channel frame. At this time, Frame Filtering enables advanced capabilities such as Advanced Zoning and Advanced Performance Monitoring. |
|
| |
| Advanced Zoning | WWN Zoning and Access Control are included in the DC SAN Backbone hardware. Administrators can organize a physical fabric into logical groups and prevent unauthorized access by devices outside the Zone. |
|
| |
| WebTools | WebTools is an intuitive and easy-to-use graphical interface that enables organizations to monitor and manage HP SAN switch fabrics. SAN administrators can perform management tasks by using a Java-capable Web browser from standard laptops, desktop PCs, or workstations from any location within the enterprise. |
|
| |
|
SAN Director Power Pack Software Bundle | The SAN Director Power Pack Software bundle includes: |
| |
| | |
| Extended Fabric |
Extends all of the scalability, reliability, and performance benefits of Fibre Channel Storage Area Networks (SANs) beyond the native 10 km distance specified by the Fibre Channel standard. |
| | |
| ISL Trunking | For high performance enhanced Trunking, this license logically groups up to eight E-ports to provide a high bandwidth trunk between two switches. Each 8 Gb switch needs its own license. The switch operating system views the trunk as a single, high bandwidth resource (up to 64 Gb) when routing connections between switches. Connections are load-balanced across the individual links, which comprise the logical trunk group. |
| | |
| Adaptive Networking | Adaptive Networking (AN) is a family of technologies which allow flexible control of traffic movement within the fabric which deliver application aware management of fabric resources. Applications may be used with multiple protocols and multiple classes of service. It includes the following features: | |
| Allows the ingress bandwidth of a port to be throttled to a rate lower than negotiated with the SAN node. This could be very useful for enterprises offering stepped levels of service and enforcing SLAs. | |
| Enables zones with high, medium, and low priorities within a fabric on a zone by zone basis. This can be very useful for prioritizing array replication over MANs and WANs over less critical traffic. | |
| Defines paths through a fabric for some or all nodes. Failover allows a non-preferred path to be used if the preferred fails. TIZs use failover by default but it can be disabled if traffic should stop if a preferred path fails. TIZ can be used to manually map out traffic flows within a fabric based on application, priority, and topology. | |
| Advanced Performance Monitor | This enabling technology helps administrators monitor and watch specific fabric metrics -- from a SID (Source ID) to a DID (Destination ID) -- so they can fine-tune and scale the fabric more efficiently. Plus, Advanced Performance Monitoring includes the ability for early warning detection of hot spots within the fabric, a powerful tool for maintaining overall balanced performance. Top Talkers is a component of Advanced Performance Monitoring and tracks the top traffic flows for hosts and targets for a switch port or a switch. Top Talkers can help identify the ports that need certain Quality of Service (QoS) attributes or it can help determine portions of the physical topology that need reconfiguration. | |
| | ||
| Fabric Watch | Fabric Watch enables each switch to monitor the SAN for potential faults and automatically alert network managers to problems before they become failures. Fabric Watch tracks a variety of SAN fabric elements, events, and counters. Monitoring fabric-wide events, ports, SFPs, and environmental parameters permits early fault detection and isolation as well as performance measurement. Each switch in the SAN needs its own Fabric Watch license. |
|
| |
| Fabric Manager | Fabric Manager is a highly scalable, Java-based application that manages multiple switches and multiple fabrics (up to eight) in real time, helping SAN administrators with SAN configuration, monitoring, dynamic provisioning, and daily management. SAN administrators gain rapid access to critical SAN information across multiple personality fabrics, including both Fabric OS SANs and enhanced Secure Fabric OS SANs. |

|
|
| HP StorageWorks DC SAN Backbone Director ICL Bundle Kit | Inter Chassis Links (ICLs) harness
unused ports to connect the switching backplane of one DC SAN Backbone with
the switching backplane of a second DC SAN Backbone Director. This additional
full duplex connection does not consume usable ports. ICL connections operate
as hardware trunked ISLs.
Each ICL Bundle Kit contains: -four (4) 2 meter copper cables Each ICL connection is the equivalent of 16 fixed speed 8Gbit/sec E_PORTs. ICLs yield a 512Gbit/sec connection between two DC SAN Backbone chassis'. This is a full-duplex connection for an aggregate data movement of 1Tbit/sec. ISL Trunking is automatically enabled across the 16 x 8Gbit/sec connections within each ICL resulting in a 128Gbit/sec, frame-balanced pipe. Each ICL exchange is balanced across the 4 ICLs. ICLs can work in conjunction with conventional ISL using optical cables and ports on the DC SAN Backbone Director port blades. ISLs can be used to add bandwidth to the ICLs or to connect other switches to a DC SAN Backbone Director |
|
HP StorageWorks |
Optional software allows FICON Director Switching to provide Fibre Channel and FICON intermix, FICON Control Unit Port (CUP), and FICON cascading for more then one B-Series SAN Director in XP Storage Array environments. The license feature provides Control Unit Port (CUP) in-and management function designed to allow mainframe applications to perform configuration, monitoring, management and statistics collection. These applications include System Automation for OS/390 (SA/390), Dynamic Channel Management Facility (DCM) and Resource Management Facility (RMF). Hardware- enforced FICON and FCP port zoning enhances separation with intermix operation. |
| HP B-series SAN Backbone Director Integrated Routing LTU | Integrated Routing is an optional license which provides native Fibre Channel Routing (FRC) on a per-port basis, rather than limiting routing ports to those on a dedicated routing blade or switch. Just like traditional FCR, Integrated Routing uses EX_Ports to import/export devices between fabrics, enabling selective device sharing while maintaining remote fabric isolation. Integrated Routing provides architecture flexibility to route on a port-by-port basis, enabling increased scalability and fault isolation. |
|
|
|
| HP StorageWorks MP Blade Performance Extension LTU | Optional software license to activate the high performance extension services. The HP MPR Blade provides two types of SAN Services: FC-FC Subnet Routing Service for SAN island consolidation: Logically connect devices in multiple SAN fabrics to share storage resources-from any fabric regardless of distance-with the administration and fault isolation benefits of separately managed fabrics. FCIP and FC Tunneling Service for SAN extension over distance: Either seamlessly and reliably extends HP B-Series SANs across MAN and WAN IP networks or dark fiber and xWDM Fire Channel networks with high performance extension services, fully integrated with HP CA solutions for EVA and XP. FC and FCIP extension services are mutually exclusive. |
