Platform HPC V1.0 for Insight Control Environment for Linux

Platform HPC V1.0 for ICE-Linux (Platform HPC) provides a comprehensive High Performance Computing software stack for deployment and provisioning by HP Insight Control Environment for Linux (ICE-Linux) for Linux-based HP ProLiant server platforms. Platform HPC also provides powerful tools for managing the software stack. Using the HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) framework and Platform Computing Open Cluster Stack 5, this solution integrates open source technologies with HP's industry-leading cluster deployment, monitoring and management software, HP ICE-Linux Version 2.1 software.

Platform Computing Open Cluster Stack 5 is based upon the open source cluster toolkit Kusu. For more details on Kusu please visit http://www.hpccommunity.org.

Standard Features

Software Management

Incorporated into Platform HPC is a powerful feature known as Kits. A Kit is an 'intelligent' container for application. A Kit contains software, documentation as well as installation / de-installation methods to simply the task of software deployment and maintenance in clustered environments.
Platform HPC Kits have the following properties:

Software packaged in RPM format
Meta-RPMs containing documentation & installation / de-installation scripts
Component definitions which define the software that comprises components, dependencies as well as configuration scripts

Platform HPC maintains software repositories containing Kits, as well as the operating system images. Additionally, Platform HPC generates the required deployment configuration ('kickstart') file used to control the provisioning of nodes. HP ICE-Linux utilizes this information to provision the cluster nodes.

Node Properties

Platform HPC includes functionality known as node groups. A node group is a template, which defines the properties of a set of nodes. This includes the following properties:

Repository to Use (Defines OS)
Installation type (package, image, diskless)
Software components to install (components are packaged in Kits)
Disk Partitioning Scheme (including LVM)
Network Configurations (including InfiniBand interfaces)
OS packages
Custom Scripts
Cluster Node naming scheme
Custom driver modules to load
Kernel parameters
Kernel and Initrd to boot

Nodes added to HP ICE-Linux are automatically added to the 'unmanaged node' group of Platform HPC. Once added, unmanaged nodes may be moved to any defined node group where it will inherit the properties of the node group. Changes to Platform HPC node group membership is automatically reflected in the HP Systems Insight Manager GUI.

The (re-)provisioning of the nodes is performed by HP ICE-Linux. Synchronization between Platform HPC and HP ICE-Linux is achieved via the Platform HPC integration daemon.

Management Console

Management of software and node groups may be performed via the Platform HPC web GUI. The web GUI provides control over the Platform HPC software repositories, Kits as well as node templates in a simplified fashion. This provides an alternative to the Platform HPC command line utilities
In addition to the software management features, the Platform HPC web GUI includes an application-centric job submission and management interface. The interface is integrated with Platform Lava (or optionally Platform LSF) and provides the ability to submit and monitor jobs without requiring knowledge of the underlying workload manager.
The Platform HPC web GUI may be accessed via the HP Systems Insight Manager interface.

Workload Manager
Platform HPC includes Platform Lava, an open source workload manager designed to meet a variety of workload scheduling needs in clusters up to ~512 nodes.

Platform HPC for ICE-Linux includes an OFED Kit for the support of InfiniBand® hardware. The Kit is based upon the OFED release 1.4.

Deployment and Provisioning

Platform HPC provides a flexible software management infrastructure, which includes the following capabilities:

Software repositories
- For maintaining operating system, applications (packaged as Kits)
Generation of deployment configuration ('kickstart') files to be utilized by HP ICE-Linux V2.1
Node group templates
- Used to define characteristics of a collection of nodes
Command line and web GUI

HP ICE-Linux V2.1 delivers a versatile deployment solution for the software repositories maintained by Platform HPC. Utilizing the software management capabilities of Platform HPC, deployment of software is simplified for clustered environments.

Hardware Support

The following Blade Servers are supported by Platform HPC: ProLiant BL260c G5 ,ProLiant BL2x220c G5, ProLiant BL460c G5, ProLiant BL480c. The following Blade enclosures are supported by Platform HPC: c3000 enclosure, c7000 enclosure. The following rack servers are supported by Platform HPC: ProLiant DL160 G5, ProLiant DL165 G5, ProLiant DL180 G5, ProLiant DL185 G5, ProLiant DL380G5, ProLiant DL385 G5. The Central Management Server (CMS) hardware hosting HP Insight Control Environment for Linux must meet the following minimum requirements.

Software Support

HP software support is available for operating systems on managed systems with the latest versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 5, Updates 1 & 2) . Platform HPC is supported with RHEL 5, Update 1 or Update 2 and Insight Control Environment for Linux V2.1.
