Sun Solaris 10 Subscriptions and Support

Sun Solaris 10 Subscriptions and Support products are available for purchase separately for use with an existing HP ProLiant and HP BladeSystem servers. Solaris 10 on ProLiant servers delivers the performance, stability and security users and customers demand. With more applications available than for any other open operating system, one OS can span your entire enterprise: the Web tier, the data warehouse, and the most demanding technical compute applications.

Solaris 10, released in early 2005, includes many innovative features. Some of the highest regarded include: ZFS, Solaris Dynamic Tracing (DTrace), Solaris Containers, Predictive Self Healing, Solaris Trusted Extensions, and Logical Domains (LDoms). The unique features of the Solaris OS are designed to deliver breakthrough enterprise functionality as well as flexibility in a wide range of business environments.

Solaris advantages are not just on the technical side; it also provides operational benefits to businesses: unique among operating system vendors, Sun protects your IT investments by guaranteeing that existing Solaris applications will run unmodified on Solaris 10, and provides a support life cycle oriented toward deployment longevity.

The latest update to the Solaris 10 OS (5/09) includes significant enhancements to the innovative Solaris ZFS file system. Systems running Solaris 10 can now boot from ZFS and can use ZFS as their root file system. Solaris 10 5/09 also includes virtualization enhancements including the ability for a Solaris Container to automatically update its environment when moved from one system to another, Logical Domains support for dynamically reconfigurable disk and network I/O, and paravirtualization support when Solaris 10 is used as a guest OS in Xen-based environments such as Sun xVM Server. Solaris 10 5/09 also includes support for the latest systems from Sun and other vendors, such as those based on the Intel ® Xeon® Processor 7400 Series.

Security Solaris 10 includes some of the world's most advanced security features, such as Process and User Rights Management, Trusted Extensions for Mandatory Access Control, the Cryptographic Framework and Secure By Default Networking that allow you to safely deliver new solutions, consolidate with security and protect mission-critical data.

Performance & Scalability Benefit from a turbocharged TCP/IP stack, a radically improved kernel, advanced tracing technology, and special optimizations for memory allocation and chip multithreading (CMT)-getting faster performance without requiring changes to your existing applications.

Observability The Solaris 10 release gives you observability into your system with tools such as Solaris Dynamic Tracing (DTrace), which enables real-time application debugging and optimization.

Virtualization Solaris 10 has powerful virtualization features built in at no additional charge. With Solaris Containers, you can maintain a one application per virtual server deployment model while consolidating dozens or even hundreds of applications onto one server and OS instance. Share hardware resources while maintaining predictable service levels; increase utilization rates, cut system and licensing costs while gaining the ability to quickly provision and move workloads from system to system. Logical Domains and Xen-based paravirtualization support add even more virtualization flexibility.

Availability New Solaris 10 features, such as Predictive Self Healing, support automatic diagnosis and recovery from hardware and application faults, maximizing system uptime.

Data Management Solaris 10 offers dramatic advances in file system and volume management by delivering virtually unlimited capacity and near-zero administration.

Interoperability Solaris 10 interoperates with many other operating environments, including Linux and Microsoft Windows systems. In addition, Solaris 10 supports popular open source applications and supports open standards such as UDDI, SOAP, WSDL, and XML.

Solaris Application Guarantee

Sun has maintained binary compatibility between operating system releases for nearly a decade, enabling existing Solaris applications to run unmodified on Solaris 10. This means that Solaris applications developed ten years ago will run on Solaris 10 unchanged, taking full advantage of new and advanced Solaris features. With Solaris 10, Sun now guarantees source code compatibility between SPARC and x86 processors, ensuring applications can run across platforms with a simple recompile.

  • Guaranteed application compatibility from release to release of Solaris
  • Guaranteed application compatibility between x86 and SPARC platforms
  • Binary compatibility in Solaris translates to lower development, testing, and deployment costs.
