The BL860c takes advantage of the power and cooling and density advantages of c-Class as well as shared networking resources and reduced cable management requirements.

The BL860c utilizes the Intel® Itanium® processors as well as the HP zx2 chipset. The BL860c has significant commonality with other BladeSystem servers. They share the same I/O mezzanine cards and the same SFF SAS hot plug disk drives. .
Importantly, the BL860c supports HP-UX 11i and OpenVMS operating environments as well as Integrity Linux and Integrity Windows. HP-UX and OpenVMS operating environments are not supported on x86 BladeSystem servers.

The HP Integrity BL860c server blade is recognized by the On-Board Administrator of the BladeSystem enclosures. On-Board Administrator functionality is consistent across the BladeSystem family.
- In an HP-UX environment, HP-UX and applications are deployed in a manner consistent with other Integrity entry-class rack-optimized servers. Existing HP-UX customers can deploy utilizing the same tools, such as Ignite, as other Integrity servers.
- In a Linux environment, Linux can be deployed utilizing HP's Rapid Deployment Pack. Also Open Source tools may be employed.
