AMD Rev F Opteron Issues

HP has discovered some issues with AMD Rev F Opteron processors and Linux. These issues are not ProLiant specific. HP is working with Red Hat and Novell to get these issues corrected as soon as possible.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4 (x86)

To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4 (x86) to a DL585 G2 or a BL685c, perform the following steps:
  • Before installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the kernel boot string.
  • After installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the GRUB configuration file.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4 (AMD64/EM64T)

To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4 (AMD64/EM64T) to a DL585 G2 or a BL685c, perform the following steps:
  • Enable the Linux x86_64 option in RBSU:
    • Press the F9 key during powerup to access RBSU.
    • Select Advanced Options.
    • Select the Linux x86_64 HPET option and change the setting to Enabled.
    • Press the F10 key to exit RBSU. The server restarts automatically.
  • Before installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the kernel boot string.
  • After installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the GRUB configuration file.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 3 (x86)

To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 3 (x86) to an AMD Rev F Opteron system, perform the following steps:
  • Before installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the kernel boot string.
  • After installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the GRUB configuration file.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 3 (AMD64/EM64T)

To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 3 (AMD64/EM64T) to a DL585 G2 or a BL685c, perform the following steps:
  • Enable the Linux x86_64 option in RBSU:
    • Press the F9 key during powerup to access RBSU.
    • Select Advanced Options.
    • Select the Linux x86_64 HPET option, and change the setting to Enabled.
    • Press the F10 key to exit RBSU. The server restarts automatically.
  • Before installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the kernel boot string.
  • After installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the GRUB configuration file.
To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 3 (AMD64/EM64T) to any other AMD Rev F Opteron system, perform only the following steps:
  • Before installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the kernel boot string.
  • After installation: Add the parameter "pci=nommconf" to the GRUB configuration file.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 (x86)

To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 (x86) to an AMD Rev F Opteron system, perform the following steps:
  • Upgrade the kernel to version 2.4.21-47.0.1.EL or greater.
  • Add the boot parameter "vga=0x317" to the GRUB configuration file. This fixes an issue where the user sometimes cannot switch from graphics mode to text mode. If this problem occurs, the monitor will display text that says "Input out of range."
  • In order to use more than 4 GB RAM, you must manually install the hugemem i686 kernel.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 (AMD64/EM64T)

To install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 (AMD64/EM64T) to an AMD Rev F Opteron system, perform the following step:
  • Add the boot parameter "vga=0x317" to the GRUB configuration file. This fixes an issue where the user sometimes cannot switch from graphics mode to text mode. If this problem occurs, the monitor will display text that says "Input out of range."

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 7 (x86)

HP does not support AMD Rev F Opteron servers with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 7 (x86). Below are some of the issues discovered:
  • USB 2.0 devices do not work properly.
  • HPET is unsupported causing clock drift.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 7 (AMD64/EM64T)

HP does not support AMD Rev F Opteron servers with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 7 (AMD64/EM64T). Below are some of the issues discovered:
  • USB 2.0 devices do not work properly.

SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 (x86)

To install SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 (x86) to an AMD Rev F Opteron system, perform the following step:
  • Add the boot parameter "clock=hpet" to the GRUB configuration file. This fixes an issue where SLES 10 does not select the appropriate clock timer.

SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 (AMD64/EM64T)

There are currently no known issues with SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 (AMD64/EM64T) and AMD Rev F Opteron servers.

SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 SP3 (x86)

There are currently no known issues with SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 SP3 (x86) and AMD Rev F Opteron servers.

SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 SP3 (AMD64/EM64T)

To install SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 SP3 (AMD64/EM64T) to a DL585 G2 or a BL685c, perform the following steps:
  • Enable the Linux x86_64 option in RBSU:
    • Press the F9 key during powerup to access RBSU.
    • Select Advanced Options.
    • Select the Linux x86_64 HPET option and change the setting to Enabled.
  • If there is 4 GB RAM or greater installed in a DL585 G2 or a BL685c, you must enable the Memory Interleaving option in RBSU
    • Press the F9 key during powerup to access RBSU.
    • Select Advanced Options.
    • Select the Node Interleaving option and change the setting to Enabled.
  • Press the F10 key to exit RBSU. The server restarts automatically.
