Xen Support

Xen is a hypervisor (virtual machine monitor)
  • Creates and launches virtual machines
  • Keeps machines isolated
  • Provides memory management and cpu scheduling
  • I/O interrupt processing
  • Event and memory channel between domains

XEN Architecture

A host domain provides control and management functions for the virtual machines through the VMM (usually has access to a privileged VMM API)

A guest domain is an isolated environment containing operating system and application software. This software runs unprivileged, but it may not be aware of that fact.

A virtual machine (VM) provides a faithful implementation of a physical processor's hardware running in a protected and isolated environment.

A virtual machine monitor (VMM) is responsible for allocating resources (CPU, memory, networking, storage) for domains and scheduling domains. It presents domains with a virtual machine. The VMM may implement the instruction set for any processor in a virtual machine. If it implements the instruction set for the processor on which it is running, it is called a hypervisor. The VMM runs as a privileged task on a physical processor.
