Compaq Insight Manager 4.50

Question and Answer

Q:   What is Compaq Insight Manager and how is it different from Compaq Insight Manager LC and Compaq Insight Manager XE?
A: Compaq Insight Manager is the world's most widely used server management tool. Its user interface is a full-featured traditional 32-bit Windows-based application, which runs on the management console, and provides extensive system management capabilities for Compaq platforms. Compaq Insight Manager LC is a new tool for managing PC desktops, workstations, portables and non-Compaq DMI-2 compliant devices. It can manage up to 200 desktops and supports DMI. Compaq Insight Manager XE leverages the power of the Internet, and adds the capability to monitor non-Compaq systems and clusters. It is more scalable than LC because it manages servers, desktops, and other devices such as hubs and routers. Compaq Insight Manager, Compaq Insight Manager LC, and Compaq Insight Manager XE are part of the overall Compaq Intelligent Manageability strategy.

Q:   Does Compaq Insight Manager XE replace Compaq Insight Manager?
A: Some of the capabilities in Compaq Insight Manager are currently unavailable in Compaq Insight Manager XE. The top three are extensive data collection, version control and Integration Server maintenance. There are some capabilities available in Compaq Insight Manager XE that are unavailable in the current Compaq Insight Manager. The top three are auto-discovery and identification of third party devices, group operations and treatment of clients equal to servers. Both products work with the same Compaq Management Agents and we encourage customers to explore both products.

Q:   What's new in Compaq Insight Manager 4.50?
A: Compaq Insight Manager's ability to manage both the platform and operating system as a single environment has been expanded to include support for NetWare. NetWare Operating System Management support provides monitoring of key NetWare parameters.
  • Compaq Insight Manager is now able to identify and manage Compaq Thin Clients including the new Compaq T1000 and T1500 devices.
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4, SP6.

Q:   What are Compaq Management Agents?
A: Compaq Management Agents are the cornerstones of Compaq Insight Manager and Compaq Insight Manager XE. The Agents provide in-depth subsystem information, status, and faults on servers, workstations, desktops and portables. The Compaq Management Agents communicate directly with the management application and are available for a variety of operating systems including Windows NT, OpenVMS and Tru64 Unix.

Q:   Are Compaq Management Agents modular?
A: Beginning with version 4.30, Compaq Management Agents may be updated in their entirety or as individual components to add new functionality. For example, if the user decided to add a new Storage subsystem to a server, only the Compaq Storage Agent component needs to be updated on the server. This architecture positions Compaq to better address customer needs by delivering new Agent functionality independent of hardware releases and expedite hardware releases by adding management support independent of each other.

Q:   What changes have been made to the PFCUser account that is installed with the Windows NT Management components?
A: Version 4.50 fixes some issues that have been found with the PFCUser account created during an install of the Compaq Management Agents for Servers

    a) The automatic creation of the user account and automatic generation of the password has been discontinued to alleviate customer concerns over the vulnerability of an automatically generated account and password.

    b) During an assisted install of the Compaq Management Agents, a dialog box will notify the user that an account is required for the Windows NT Management components. The user will be presented the option to create a new account, use an existing account or cancel the install of the Windows NT Management components. During a command line installation, the installer will allow command line options to pass a Username and Password so that the agents can be installed in silent mode.

    c) The privileges associated with the user account have been changed, and the only user right retained is to allow the account to logon locally. During an upgrade of the Windows NT Management components, the installer will remove the existing PFCUser account if it exists, and prompt the user for a new account and password and creates it with minimum privileges.

Q:   Do the Compaq Management Agents monitor only the hardware environment?
A: No, Compaq raises the bar yet again in base level manageability by adding OS management for NetWare environments to its superior hardware availability management, and existing support for the Windows NT Operating System. Users will now be able to get an integrated hardware and software view of their NetWare environments via the web-enabled Compaq Management Agents. The OS information within the Compaq Management Agents enhances the quality and detail of information reported by the agents, enabling users to better manage their environments. Earlier this year, in the Compaq Management Agents v4.22, Compaq introduced the ability to manage Windows NT environments through a technology alliance with BMC Software. By being able to set thresholds on key Windows NT parameters, users are able to receive pre-failure alerts for their Windows NT systems at the Compaq Insight Manager and Compaq Insight Manager XE consoles. By being able to quickly determine if an event is caused by hardware or software, users of the Windows NT monitoring capability benefit from faster determination of the root cause of system and application faults. Customers also benefit from the proactive performance analysis and tuning of the integrated platform and application environments.

Q:   To what level will Compaq Management Agents monitor the Operating System environment?
A: The first release of the management of NetWare Operating System in the Compaq Management Agents v4.50 will enable customers to only monitor parameters of the NetWare Operating system. In a later release, Compaq will add the ability to set thresholds on key NetWare parameters and receive pre-failure alerts at the Compaq Insight Manager and Compaq Insight Manager XE consoles.

Q:   How can I obtain the Compaq Management Agents, Compaq Insight Manager, Compaq Insight Manager LC, and Compaq Insight Manager XE?
