    Answers
Q1. When I install HP Systems Insight Manager on my server I receive a message indicating it can’t continue because Toptools or Insight Manager is or had been previously installed.
A1. The installation wizard checks the registry for the existence for a previous installation of HP Toptools and Insight Manager. The keys being searched for are: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard\TopTools and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\COMPAQ\Insight Manager XE First make sure that application is uninstalled, then check for the presence of the keys. If one or more exist, delete the entry.
Q2. How do I compile (register) MIBs into HP Systems Insight Manager and what will this provide for me?
A2. You register MIBs into HP Systems Insight Manager by using the mcompile and mxmib command line tools. Previously with Insight Manager 7 you could register MIBs via the MIB Manager GUI. A GUI feature is not available in this version. Registering MIBs is an advanced topic for users as you may be required to modify and/or rename source MIB files to get them registered with HP Systems Insight Manager. It is recommended that you consult the product documentation and the MIB integration white paper for more information. Registering MIBs with HP Systems Insight Manager enables you to receive traps from 3rd party devices that are not supported "out of the box" by HP Systems Insight Manager.
Q3. Why do I now have to have X Server software running on Windows to view X Window tools?
A3. HP Systems Insight Manager utilizes a web-based graphical user interface (GUI). All X Window tools require a server to be running, and since HP Systems Insight Manager by default does not require one, you will need to start the X Server when you wish to run an X Window tool.
Q4. Can I change the ports used by HP Systems Insight Manager or the web-based agents?
A4. No, the solution does not currently allow the ports to be changed. HP has registered all of the ports that it uses with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA, at www.iana.org) and thus there should not be a port conflict with other software.
Q5. Why are my servers listed as Unknown devices?
A5. There are many possible answers:
    • You must be able to ping the device from the server where HP Systems Insight Manager is running.
    • Community strings must match - make sure HP Systems Insight Manager & managed systems are using the same one. Note that community strings are case sensitive.
    • Under Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000, one community name on the device must be set to READ CREATE. Note that you do not have to use this to the community string in HP Systems Insight Manager (a community string set to READ is all that is required.) The Management Agents connect to themselves using SNMP and require one string set to READ CREATE.
    • The HP Systems Insight Manager system must be allowed to make SNMP requests to the device - make sure the SNMP security settings aren't preventing this. Under Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000, either the "Allow SNMP packets from any host" must be selected or the address of the Insight Manager 7 server must be in the list of allowed hosts.
    • If you are using IP-specific security (as in the second part of d above) localhost (127.0.0.1) must also be allowed to make SNMP requests to the host. The Management Agents connect to themselves using SNMP and thus need to be able to get in.
    • The Management Agents must be installed and running properly on the servers you are trying to manage. For Windows systems, check the Event Log to make absolutely sure they are running (you should see a few 'Agents started' messages and no errors.)
    • Routers/Switches in the network must pass SNMP traffic on ports 161/162 and 7.
Q6. I've messed up my HP Systems Insight Manager server (deleted default queries or tasks, etc.) - is there some way to restore the default database without reinstalling?
A6. Yes, run the following command from the command line:

    mxconfigrepo –a

Q7. When and why is the OpenSSH server installed on a managed system?
    A7.

The platform where the CMS is installed needs SSH to be installed and running for HP SIM to operate. For managed systems, SSH or OpenSSH is only required when a task is run which actually makes changes on the managed system. This could include tools from the Tool menu including CLI options, or where changes are made to multiple systems. SSH is not required on managed systems for basic discovery, inventory or identification.

Q8. Can I install HP Systems Insight Manager on the same platform as I have been using for Insight Manager 7?
    A8.

HP SIM 4.0 does not support this configuration. Both applications use the same or similar ports so conflicts would occur.

However, with HP SIM 4.1 and 4.2, you can install HP SIM over a working IM7 SP2.3 version and migrate selected data into HP SIM. The HP SIM 4.1 and 4.2 installation disables IM7. This “in-place” migration preserves IM7 user defined data including the IM7 server certificate. Read more details about the process in the HP SIM 4.2 User Guide.
Q9. Why are the SNMP or DNS names for RIBs/iLO/Servers not being populated in either the nameSNMP or the nameFULLDNS sections of the device names table within HP SIM? This seems to be preventing device association or device identification with Lights Out devices. All that displays are the IP addresses.
    A9.

The device association code in HP SIM relies heavily on properly configured SNMP agents on the servers and some data from the iLO itself. The DNS and SNMP names are listed to help users find systems in the list and for display purposes. These names will not display if SNMP is not configured, the community name is not entered, or there is a community name mismatch. Summary – this problem has typically been caused by a miss-configured DNS server or missing entries in the DNS server.

    1. For DNS names, the DNS server used on your network must allow reverse lookups. The systems to be managed must have registered themselves with the DNS server. Correct registration for a specific system can be checked by following these steps:
      A) Open a command prompt and run nslookup <ip> using the IP of the target system. The response should return both a name and an IP.
      B) Run ping against the name returned from the nslookup. An IP address will be resolved and then the ping will be run against it.
      C) Compare the IP address that appears when running the ping – is this IP the same as the one used when you ran nslookup in step A?
If the IP addresses are different - then HP SIM will only show the original IP address in the System Lists and not the friendly name. The IP mismatch indicates that the DNS server configuration may be at fault.

    2. Another method to renew DNS registration is to (from the system itself) use the ipconfig command. At a command prompt, type:
      ipconfig /registerdns
      Or, type ipconfig /registerdns [adapter]

Where adapter is the name of a specific network adapter installed on the computer for which you want to renew or update registrations.

The ipconfig /registerdns command provides you with a means to manually initiate dynamic registration for the DNS names and IP addresses configured at a computer. This option can assist in troubleshooting a failed DNS name registration or in resolving a dynamic update problem between a client and the DNS server without requiring a client reboot. You can go to the Microsoft website at http://microsoft.com and search on "DNS registration" for further information.

    3. The last solution is to add the IP address and name to the HOSTS file on your CMS platform.
Q10. When I try to browse to HP Systems Insight Manager using Internet Explorer, the browser appears to freeze. How can I fix this?
A10. Microsoft recently released a security vulnerability patch to Internet Explorer (MS04-025, documented in Knowledge Base article KB867801) that changed the behavior of how IE treats scripting and binary objects. This creates an issue with HP Systems Insight Manager with the symptom being the apparent “hang” of the browser prior to the login prompts for credentials. Full releases and updates that address this issue are now available for all versions of HP Systems Insight Manager 4.0 and HP Systems Insight Manager 4.1, and can be obtained from the download page.
Q11. In HP SIM 4.1 I was able to correct an SSH key issue by deleting the system from the known_hosts file and re-identifying the system. However, this does not work in HP SIM 4.2. Why?
A11. The known_hosts file in HP SIM 4.2 is loaded into memory when the HP SIM service is started. To remove systems from the known_hosts you now need to run the following command:
           mxagentconfig -r -n <nodename or IP address>

If you are concerned that there are name variations for that system in the known_hosts file, you can enter a string of names and the IP, such as:
           mxagentconfig -r -n mynode mynode.hp.com 12.1.2.3

After running the command, the changes will be made in the memory version of the known_hosts and the file re-written.
Q12. How can I easily bring in sync the SNMP community names and the certificates for my Windows ProLiant agents?
A12. Repair Agent Settings will allow multiple target systems to have their SNMP settings, SMH/Elm Trust mechanisms, and legacy Elm credentials repaired. This feature was developed to help customers ‘repair’ these problems on Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 systems and thereby enhance their ease of use. Below is a summary of the use of the feature:
    1. HP SIM user detects a problem with a device or a group of devices
    2. User selects “Repair Agent settings” tool from the HP SIM menu which presents the task wizard UI asking:
      1. Administrative credentials for the device(s) such as administrator user name and password as well as domain name.
      2. Whether to repair SNMP settings such as the Read community string and setting the trap destination to the CMS.
      3. Whether to repair the trust relationship by setting it to trust by certificate and installing the certificate for the CMS.
      4. Whether to repair the administrator password for legacy agents
    3. The local CMS-side tool connects natively using Windows remote management APIs to the device, copies over the Repair Agent Settings repair tool and data file (containing HP SIM community strings, trust relationship data, etc), starts up a remote launcher service causing the repair tool to run.
    4. The repair tool runs on the device and attempts to update all the settings. It generates a file containing results.
    5. The local CMS-side tool scans target devices for existence of result files, read them, and sends the contents to standard output to be included as the task output. Once a particular target’s results file is retrieved, the tool remotely removes the target service and all of its files.
This tool does not require SSH to be installed on the managed system. The tool also does not make any repairs to SSH settings or keys. Additional details can be found in the HP SIM 4.2 on-line help.
Q13. Where can I find out about upgrading HP SIM 4.0/4.1, Insight Manager 7, or Servicecontrol Manager to the new HP SIM 4.2?
A13. Information about upgrading HP SIM 4.0/4.1, Insight Manager 7, and Servicecontrol Manager to HP Systems Insight Manager 4.2 is provided on our Upgrade and Migration information page.
Q14. Why am seeing enclosures or racks with strange characters appended to their names such as "ENCL--EA-JK-LJ--"?
A14. This problem has been fixed with our HP SIM 4.02.00.01 update. Please go to our download page to get this latest update.
Q15. Why do I have the same IP address repeated on the System page for a device?
A15. This problem has been fixed with our HP SIM 4.02.00.01 update. Please go to our download page to get this latest update.
Q16. Why can't I log back into HP SIM after I upgraded to SIM 5.0 SP4?
A16. You will not be able to log back into HP SIM after upgrading to HP SIM 5.0 SP4 if:
    • You upgraded from HP SIM 5.0 SP3 to SP4,
    • AND... you had not installed HP SIM in the default directory (i.e. c:\program files\....)
See this forum thread for workaround information. If you had installed the full kit for HP SIM 5.0 with SP4, if you upgraded from a service pack other than SP3, or if you had installed HP SIM 5.0 SP3 in the default directory, the login problem will not occur.
Q17. Why are some of the new HP BladeSystem components are not discovered or correctly identified in HP SIM?
A17. Be sure you have the newest version of HP BladeSystem Integrated Manager installed in order for HP SIM to correctly discover all your HP BladeSystem components.  Please check for the new updates of HP BladeSystem Integrated Manager.
