Answers

Insight Manager 7 SP2 - Version Control Agent for Linux
Q1. Will I need to update my Version Control Repository Manager to utilize the new Version Control Agent for Linux?
A1. Yes, an updated Version Control Repository Manager is necessary in order to comprehend the software and firmware components for Linux. This updated version of the Version Control Repository Manager will not contain new functionality, but it will be able to communicate with the Version Control Agent for Linux.
Q2. Will version control within Insight Manager 7 work the same for my ProLiant servers running Linux as it does for my Windows systems?
A2. Yes. The Version Control Agent for Linux will report out-of-date ProLiant software and firmware in the same manner as the Version Control Agent for Windows. In addition, you will be able to create and schedule the deployment tasks from within Insight Manager 7 to distribute updates to your Linux servers.
Q3. Do I need to do anything to get the Version Control Repository Manager to automatically download updates for my Linux systems?
A3. You only need to configure your Version Control Agents for Linux to point to a Version Control Repository Manager that has the Automatic Update feature enabled. It will automatically detect that Version Control Agents on Linux systems have been configured to use it as a reference and begin downloading the ProLiant system software and firmware updates for those Linux systems.
Q4. Does my Version Control Repository Manager run on a Linux system?
A4. No - the Version Control Repository Manager will still run on a Windows system consistent with Insight Manager 7. The updated Version Control Repository Manager will talk to the Version Control Agents running on your Linux systems and correctly report software status and support software deployment from within Insight Manager 7.
Q5. How do I obtain the Version Control Agent for Linux?
A5. This initial release of the Version Control Agent for Linux will be a web-only release. It can be obtained from any of the server support pages by specifying Linux as the OS you are running on your ProLiant. In the future, the Version Control Agent for Linux will become available as a part of the ProLiant Support Pack and will be available from the SmartStart and Software Update CDs.
Insight Manager 7 SP2 - Version Control Enhancements
Q1. How do I update to the newer versions of the Version Control Agent and Version Control Repository Manager so I can start utilizing the version control enhancements for Insight Manager 7?
A1. Customers who already have the legacy Version Control Repository Manager, Version Control Agent, and Insight Manager 7 deployed within their environment can simply obtain the newer versions from the HP web site or from the ProLiant Essentials Foundation Pack 6.4 CDs and place these in their repository.  They will then be able to distribute the updated versions using Insight Manager 7.

Customers who do not already have the legacy versions deployed with Insight Manager 7 should look to install Insight Manager 7 and the newer version of the Version Control Repository Manager from the management CD that will ship with the ProLiant Essentials 6.4 and later. The Version Control Agent is deployed as a part of the ProLiant Support Pack, and can be deployed using the Remote Deployment Utility.
Q2. Will there be any charge for the updated Version Control Repository Manager and Version Control Agent as referenced in the promotional version of the Version Control Repository Manager?
A2. No. The plans to sell the Version Control Repository Manager and Version Control Agent have been canceled. The enhancements that are being made are available for free as a standard part of the ProLiant Essentials Foundation Pack.
Q3. Will there be any compatibility issues for customers who were using the legacy versions of the Version Control Agent and Version Control Repository Manager?
A3. The newer version of the Version Control Agent and Version Control Repository Manager will continue to work with legacy versions to correctly report version status and provide update capabilities, but customers may see some different behaviors if they do not upgrade to the newer versions after they are released. Specifically, the catalog within the VCRM will look different as ProLiant software updates transition to the newer software categories being used on the company web-site. This transition will be handled in the newer versions of the Version Control Repository Manager and Version Control Agent, but will not be comprehended in the legacy version of the product. The result for users of the legacy versions of the Version Control Repository Manager will be the appearance of new categories in their catalog. Within the newer versions, all updates will be correctly mapped into their new categories that are now being used.
Q4. Will the Version Control Repository Manager's automatic download capability replace ActiveUpdate as the proactive delivery vehicle for ProLiant System Software updates?
A4. Yes. Customers are encouraged to begin using the software download capabilities within the new Version Control Repository Manager. There are many benefits to using the new functionality including its ability to run as a service within the Version Control Repository Manager and its ability to automatically subscribe for software updates based on the systems that are referring to it for version status.
Insight Manager 7 SP2
Q1. Do I have to have a previous version of Insight Manager 7 to load Insight Manager 7 SP2?
A1. No. Insight Manager 7 SP2 can be installed stand-alone or as an upgrade to Insight Manager 7 or Insight Manager 7 SP1. Customers wishing to upgrade from Insight Manager XE must first upgrade to Insight Manager 7.
Q2. How do I get a copy of the ProLiant Performance Analyzer, so I can take advantage of the new performance bottleneck analysis capabilities?
A2. The ProLiant Performance Analyzer (PPA) will be landed as part of the Insight Manager 7 installation process. Customers will then be able to purchase licenses to manage server performance using PPA. For additional information, please visit the PPA product description page at www.hp.com.
Q3. The performance status for all of my servers is blue. What does this mean?
A3. The performance status for your server will be blue unless the server is licensed for management with the ProLiant Essentials Performance Management Pack. Once you have purchased a license for the system, it will report status normally. The Performance Management Pack will also report blue status if the correct version of the HP Insight Management Agents have not been installed. The Performance Management Pack requires version 6.1 or greater of the HP Insight Management Agents.
Q4. Will I have to pay for Insight Manager 7 Version Control capabilities?
A4. No. While HP was initially planning to deliver an enhanced release of Version Control as a for fee ProLiant Essentials Value Pack, we have decided to deliver Version Control as part of the base Insight Manager 7 product. There will be no additional charge for Version Control.
Q5. Why are the Version Control Agents and Version Control Repository Manager installed on my servers labeled as "promotional"?
A5. Since HP now plans to provide Version Control capabilities at no additional charge, we will be removing all reference to "Promotional Version" from the Version Control Repository Manager and the Version Control Agents. Removal of the "promotional" designation will be done at the earliest possible opportunity.
Q6. I use the device groups in Insight Manager (Win32). Can I use similar groups in Insight Manager 7 SP2?

Q7. I have a mixture of Netservers and ProLiant Servers. Can Insight Manager 7 manage my installed base of Netservers?
A7. Yes. Insight Manager 7 SP2 can discover and identify Netservers, Toptools Remote Control Cards, and HP Server Remote Management Cards and associates remote management cards with their host server. It understands all NetServer alerts and can launch Instant Toptools from the device list. Insight Manager 7 SP2 also collects a detailed set of inventory data from Netservers and exposes this information through the inventory-reporting tool.
Insight Manager 7 SP1
Q1. Do I have to make any special modification to Insight Manager 7 SP1 to manage ProLiant BL e-class and p-class servers?

Customers will be able to take advantage of all of the features of Insight Manager 7 when managing blades and leverage new features such as rack, enclosure, and blade server visualization as well as correlation of shared infrastructure events. Q4. Can I gain access to the SQL queries used to create reports generated by Insight Manager 7 SP1?
A4. Yes. Insight Manager 7 SP1 will provide access to all SQL queries used to generate inventory reports. These queries can then be used as part of reports that may pull data from multiple databases.
Q5. Now that Insight Manager 7 has inventory reporting capabilities, can I still access the database directly?
A5. Yes. In fact we've made access to relevant information in the database event easier by the creation of special reporting tables. Insight Manager 7 exports information from tables optimized for application performance to a set of tables optimized for reporting purposes. The schema for the Insight Manager 7 database including the new reporting tables is contained in the Insight Manager 7 help file and Technical Reference Guide.
Q6. What is the default discovery filter for Insight Manager 7 SP1? Will the default setting interfere with my existing Insight Manager 7 setup?
A6. The default setting for discovery filters will be servers and management processors (e.g. Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition) for fresh installations and the existing discovery filter for upgrade installations. Insight Manager 7 SP1 will preserve the set of devices that you have discovered in a previous Insight Manager 7 installation.

Insight Manager 7
Q1. Why is the product named Insight Manager 7?
A1. Insight Manager 7 was built upon seven generations of HP management technology and represents the convergence of Insight Manager (Win32) and Insight Manager XE. Insight Manager 7 combines the best of both applications for unparalleled ease of use and management functionality.
Q2. Will Insight Manager go away when Insight Manager 7 is released?
A2. Insight Manager 7 represents the convergence of Insight Manager (Win32) and Insight Manager XE and draws its feature set from both products. While we expect customers to quickly migrate to Insight Manager 7, we will continue to provide hardware support for 6 months following the Insight Manager 7 release and warranty support through the HP call center for 18 months following the Insight Manager 7 release.
Q3. What is the difference between the version control found in Insight Manager and Insight Manager XE and the new version control being introduced with Insight Manager 7?
A3. Insight Manager 7 supports both existing version control and the new generation of version control introduced with the HP Version Control Repository and the Version Control Agents. Next generation version control provides two distinct advantages over existing version control. It allows customers to determine what set of software constitutes the point of reference for version control. It also allows customers to update system software on local or remote system. When used with Insight Manager 7 software status may be tracked against multiple systems, and software updates may be performed across multiple systems.
Q4. Will the new version control support platforms other than Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server and Windows NT Server?
A4. Yes. The first iteration of the Version Control Agents will support Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server as well as Windows NT Server. Subsequent iterations of the Version Control Agents will support key platforms such as Novell NetWare and Linux. Extended platform support for the Version Control Repository is currently under investigation.
Q5. Do I have to install Insight Manager 7 on a server?
A5. No. Insight Manager 7 may be installed on DeskPro and EVO desktops running Windows 2000 Professional or it may be installed on ProLiant servers running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, or Microsoft Windows NT Server.
Q6. Does Insight Manager 7 allow me to manage more the ProLiant servers?
A6. Yes. Insight Manager 7 allows customers to manage ProLiant servers and Alpha servers as well as non-HP servers, clients, printers, and networking gear instrumented to SNMP, DMI, or HTTP. Because Insight Manager 7 comes equipped with a SNMP MIB compiler, it is also possible to receive and correctly interpret events from non-HP platforms. In addition to interpreting third party SNMP alerts, Insight Manager 7 discovers all web servers running at well-known ports. This allows customers to access the native web-based management for non-HP devices from within Insight Manager 7.
Q7. Am I able to upgrade from Insight Manager XE to Insight Manager 7?
A7. Yes. Current Insight Manager XE v2.0 or v2.1 customers will be able to do an in-place upgrade from Insight Manager XE to Insight Manager 7
