Answers

General
Q1. What is the HP Insight Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager 2000?
A1. The HP Insight Management Pack (IMP) for Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) integrates event monitoring and alert processing for HP ProLiant servers into MOM 2000.

The IMP integration builds upon the core elements of HP Insight Management Agents to complement and extend MOM and to maximize existing IT investments. HP customers who implement MOM for enterprise-class event and performance monitoring can use the IMP to help streamline IT administration and increase systems availability by viewing events for Microsoft Windows operating systems, Windows applications, and HP hardware through a common MOM interface.

Q2. What's new in revision 2.20 of the HP Insight Management Pack?
A2. Revision 2.20 of the HP Insight Management Pack includes the following new features:
  • Event processing rules updated to support definitions delivered with Insight Management Agents v7.10
  • Discovery groups for HP ProLiant servers hosting HP Systems Insight Manager, Insight Manager 7 or HP Remote Insight management processors

Q3. What operating systems are supported with the Insight Management Pack?
A3. The Insight Management Pack for MOM is designed to integrate with MOM 2000 on all host platforms support by MOM, including Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003.

Q4. Does the HP IMP rev 2.20 support MOM 2005?
A4. Revision 2.20 of the HP IMP for MOM is not qualified or formally supported for use with the MOM 2005 release. A new HP Management Pack specifically designed to complement and extend the new functionality provided with MOM 2005 will be made available during November 2004.

HP recommends customers do not install the HP IMP for MOM 2000 into production environments running MOM 2005. Installing revision 2.20 of the HP IMP will implement database entries and group definitions that do not apply in MOM 2005 and cannot be removed once installed. Installing rev 2.20 of the HP IMP might also prevent the forthcoming HP Management Pack for MOM 2005 from installing correctly, and may generate double entries for each MOM alert.

Q5. Does the HP Insight Management Pack for MOM support events for server and client hardware?
A5. Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 (MOM) is positioned to monitor server platforms at this time.

Likewise, the HP Insight Management Pack for MOM will provide event monitoring for systems built on HP server technology and Insight Management Agents for Servers. This includes the following hardware platforms:

  • HP ProLiant servers
  • Compaq ProSignia servers

Q6. How does HP Systems Insight Manager compare to Microsoft Operations Manager, and why would a customer adopt both?
A6. Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 and HP Systems Insight Manager are complementary systems management tools.

HP Systems Insight Manager provides hardware resource lifecycle management for HP and other standards-based devices. These include in-depth health and configuration information, group management, version control for HP system software, as well as integration with the HP Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition and Integrated Lights Out solutions.

Microsoft's stated focus for MOM is event and performance management, and they will rely on industry partners such as HP and others other to provide hardware and software (for non-MS software) specific management information, interpretation, and functionality in order to make MOM a broad enterprise-class operations management solution.

Many customers will choose to adopt both MOM and HP Systems Insight Manager because the two provide complementary benefits and work well together.

Q7. What service and support offerings are available for this solution?
A7. The HP Insight Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manger is supported through the normal HP Customer Support and Services channels.

Troubleshooting
Q1. Why are some elements of the HP Insight Management Pack (IMP) not visible?
A1. Refresh the MOM console interface, which displays any recent console tree updates. If some elements of the IMP are still not visible, the database may be corrupted. This can happen if the installation was interrupted or did not complete. Reinstall the IMP to correct this problem. See the "Installing the Insight Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager" section in Chapter 2 of the User Guide for complete details on installing the IMP.

Q2. Why are my HP servers not being discovered by MOM?
A2. There are a number of reasons why HP servers may not be discovered by the MOM console. Be sure that the following conditions exist on all servers to be managed:
  • SNMP services are running on all HP servers to be managed.
  • The HP Insight Management Agents are installed and active on all HP servers to be managed.
  • The MOM Agent Manager has been configured to include the target HP servers as managed computers.
  • An active MOM agent has been installed on all servers to be managed. This condition can usually be validated by the presence of the OnePoint service on each managed server.
If the MOM Agent Manager has already been configured to include the target servers as managed computers, then force a system scan. The default setting for automated daily scanning is 2:05 a.m. To enable systems to show up immediately, use the Scan managed computers now feature of the MOM Agent Manager.

Confirm that MOM has the rights to manage the target servers. In the Windows Event Log of the MOM host system, check the Application Log for warning messages from the OnePoint service.

An example of a warning message is Event ID 21196:

The Agent Manager would have taken responsibility for the following computers, but was unable to obtain write access to their registries.

Q3. My HP servers are being discovered by MOM but are not displaying within the computer groups provided with the IMP. What could be causing this?
A3. Be sure that HP Insight Management Agents Version 4.60 or later are installed and active on all HP servers to be managed with MOM. If HP Insight Management Agents are not installed, or are prior to 4.60, HP servers are not displayed under the HP specific computer groups.

Q4. Why are none of my HP events showing up as alerts under MOM?
A4. Assuming that the HP servers are included as managed computers under the Agent Manager and are being discovered correctly, be sure that:
  • Each managed HP server has local SNMP service running and that all required HP Insight Management Agents are installed and active. SNMP is required by the Insight Management Agents to ensure correct operation.
  • Each managed HP server is receiving HP events in the Windows Event Log.
  • The Windows Event Log is not full. If the Windows Event Log is full, this may prevent new events from being recorded.
  • If HP events are visible in the Windows Event Log, be sure that the event processing rules provided with the IMP are installed and enabled within MOM.

Q5. Why are HP Storage Agent and NIC Agent alerts not being forwarded to the Hardware Support Notification Group in the MOM console?
A5. Check the following items:
  • Confirm that the alert processing rules are enabled under the Storage Agent and NIC Agents rule groups provided with the IMP.
  • Verify that the Hardware Support Notification Group has been configured with at least one valid Group Operator, and that the operator properties are correct.

Q6. Why do I lose connection with the HP Insight Manager 7 application when a MOM agent is installed?
A6. The MOM agent installation process requires local SNMP services to be reset. If a MOM agent is installed onto a server running HP Insight Manager 7 SP1 or earlier, the Insight Manager 7 service may be temporarily stopped and restarted. Insight Manager 7 operations require an active SNMP service and, as a result, any clients browsing into the HP Insight Manager 7 application could receive a message stating that the connection has been lost and the browser must be closed and reopened. This problem is resolved with HP Insight Manager 7 SP1 and greater, and is not present with HP Systems Insight Manager.
