How To Install Linux On A Server When The NIC Is Not Supported By The Distribution

Applies to: Releases 3.81 through 3.83

Several Linux distributions do not contain a newer NIC version that supports the NIC in some ProLiants. Linux distributions impacted are

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES 4.7 or earlier
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 or earlier
SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 2 or earlier

To install Red Hat Linux:

1. Download the appropriate Red Hat Linux initrd.img from the HP FTP server to the RDP FTP server, overwriting the copy in .\lib\osdist\yyyy\images\pxeboot where yyyy is the operating system shortcut name.
2. Run the appropriate Red Hat Linux scripted install job on the target server.

To install SUSE LINUX:

1. Download the appropriate SUSE LINUX initrd from the HP FTP server to the RDP FTP server, overwriting the copy in .\lib\osdist\yyyy\DVD1\boot\arch\loader where yyyy is the operating system shortcut name and arch is the architecture name.
2. Additionally, for RDP 3.81 and RDP 3.82, download the SUSE LINUX Driver Update Disk from the HP FTP server to the RDP FTP Server and place in .\lib\osdist\yyyy\DVD1 where yyyy is the operating system shortcut name. If the downloaded file is compressed, make sure to uncompress it. RDP 3.83 and greater contains information in the control file to install the driver for the production kernel.

3. Rename the DUD file to driverupdate.
4. Run the appropriate SUSE LINUX scripted install job on the target server.
