Answers

What is Rapid Deployment Pack - Linux Edition?
Q1. What is the difference between the Altiris supplied version of Altiris Deployment Solution and the HP supplied version in Rapid Deployment Pack?
A1. The Altiris Deployment Solution in RDP is unchanged from the one supplied by Altiris. But in RDP it is tightly integrated with the ProLiant Integration Module, adding enhanced software, utilities and documentation to deploy and redeploy ProLiant servers. The ProLiant Integration Module also enables advanced features for the new ProLiant BL servers, which are not provided in the Altiris supplied version of Deployment Solution.

Q2. Will Altiris continue to sell Altiris Deployment Solution for Linux?
A2. Altiris has also decided to stop all further development of the Linux-hosted version of Altiris Deployment Solution.

Q3. What support and services are available with RDP?
A3. RDP comes with a 90-day limited warranty providing replacement of defective media. The warranty is fully supported by HP Services and a worldwide network of resellers and service providers. In addition 90-days getting-started software telephone support is covered under the warranty. Enhancements to warranty services are available through HP Care Pack services. The IT Resource Center (ITRC) is a single source of support for your servers, software and workstations. Designed and continually enhanced with input from our customers, the ITRC thinks the way you do, helping you make faster, better decisions for your multi-vendor IT environment.

You can log and track support requests, search technical databases, get customized software updates, choose from over 3,000 on-line training programs, participate in one of the Web's most intelligent online professional forums, and get "live" help from an HP service professional.

The ITRC has won several industry awards for its innovative features. While some features are designed for customers with HP support contracts, others are open to all. Whatever your role, you can take advantage of the worldwide forums, e-learning, and many maintenance and support services.

Q4. Will support for RDP Linux Edition remain available?
A4. Yes, HP will continue to provide support for RDP Linux Edition through September 2007.

The RDP Linux Edition transition
Q1. Can I continue to use RDP Linux Edition?
A1. Yes, even though HP has stopped further development of RDP Linux Edition, you will be able to continue to use the software with its current functionality. Support from HP also is available until September 1, 2007, and depending on your purchased support contracts.

Q2. When should I transition to a replacement product?
A2. Because HP has stopped development of RDP Linux Edition, it will not support server hardware and new operating system software releasing in 2006 and beyond. For most customers - regularly renewing server hardware and operating system software after internal evaluation - this will mean that RDP Linux Edition will need to be retired between the middle of 2006 and the end of 2006.

Q3. What alternatives is HP offering for RDP Linux Edition?
A3. HP is offering several alternative deployment solutions, each fulfilling specific customer needs:
  • HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack - Windows Edition (RDP-WE) is the Windows-hosted server deployment solution of choice for HP BladeSystem and other HP ProLiant servers, supporting the deployment of Windows, Linux and VMware server operating systems. This is the ideal replacement product for RDP-LE customers that have Windows servers and Windows knowledge in their environment. RDP-WE uses the same license files as RDP-LE and has a very similar user interface. Licensing of HP ProLiant Essentials Rapid Deployment Pack (RDP) is not specific for the hosted operating system; users are able to implement Windows Edition or Linux Edition at their choice. Because of the fact that RDP-WE has the ability to deploy both Windows and Linux operating systems (as well as WMware ESX), users generally preferred that version over RDP-LE. Current licensees of RDP-LE have the immediate ability to switch over and begin using RDP-WE at no additional charge.

  • HP Control Tower for HP BladeSystem is the Linux-hosted blade server deployment tool of choice. This is the ideal replacement product for RDP-LE customers that require or prefer a Linux-hosted deployment solution and are only deploying HP BladeSystem servers. Until August 1, 2006 HP will offer a 1-for-1 license exchange from RDP Linux Edition to HP Control Tower. Get more information on this program by filling out a transition information form.

  • The recommended solution for customers who want to continuously manage and assure compliance of their HP and non-HP servers is HP OpenView Management Suite for Servers using Radia. Through continuous management of the environment, HP OpenView Configuration Management solutions ensures that each device has the right configuration in compliance with policy at all times to support the business. Customers can leverage their HP OpenView software configuration management infrastructure and investments where the scope of management extends beyond HP-only servers.
Q4. If I decide to move from RDP Linux Edition to RDP Windows Edition, how can I exchange my RDP Linux Edition licenses to RDP Windows Edition licenses?
A4. RDP has always used identical licenses for RDP Linux Edition and RDP Windows Edition. This means you can continue to use RDP Linux Edition licenses after you migrate to RDP Windows Edition.

Q5. If I decide to move from RDP Linux Edition to HP Control Tower, can I exchange my RDP Linux Edition licenses to HP Control Tower licenses?
A5. HP wants to recognize your investment in RDP Linux Edition licenses when you migrate to HP Control Tower. Therefore, HP is enabling you to exchange your RDP Linux Edition licenses for HP Control Tower licenses. Until August 1, 2006 you will be able to exchange your RDP Linux Edition licenses for an equal number of HP Control Tower licenses. From August 1 through November 1, 2006 you will be able to exchange your RDP Linux Edition licenses to HP Control Tower licenses on a 2-for-1 basis. If you are interested in a license exchange, please fill out the RDP Linux Edition transition information form.

Updates and upgrades
Q1. Will HP continue to provide updates to RDP Linux Edition?
A1. No more updates to RDP Linux Edition will be provided; RDP Linux Edition version 1.30 was the last and final release.

Q2. If I have several groups of Rapid Deployment Pack licenses, how do I combine them?
A2. Combining licenses can be done by submitting the Altiris License Transfer form. View more information.
