Answers

Q1. What is the NC1020?
A1. The NC1020 is a 32-bit, 33/66MHz, copper, PCI bus adapter that supports basic server functionality. It was designed to meet customer requirements for a low-cost gigabit NIC comparable to a 10/100 NIC price and comes with the complete suite of software drivers for all major operating systems, NIC teaming utilities and configuration GUI that you expect from the HP ProLiant brand. It is supported, tested, and validated by HP so that it meets ProLiant standards and provides a seamless network solution with HP value-added capabilities and optimized integration.

Q2. What are the standard features of the NC1020?
A2. The standard features of the NC1020 include basic NIC functionality targeted towards entry and SMB servers:
  • Single port
  • 10/100/1000T auto-negotiated speed and duplex
  • 32-bit PCI, 33/66MHz with 64KB onboard memory
  • Designed with server needs in mind and supports:
    • Wake-on-LAN (WOL)
    • PXE support
    • Link and activity LEDs
    • IEEE NIC standards: 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ad (link aggregation, static mode configuration only), and 802.3ab (Gigabit specification for twisted-pair), 802.1x (flow control), 802.1Q (VLAN tagging),and 802.1p (packet priority)
    • Advanced server features such as: PCI Hot-plug, Network Fault Tolerance, Transmit Load Balancing, and Switch-assisted Load Balancing
  • Tested and proven to meet ProLiant standards with full software driver support, including:
    • NIC teaming drivers and utilities
    • Multiple VLAN tagging
    • Configuration GUI
    • HP integration of NIC software, firmware, and agents with other options and the ProLiant server
Q3. What's new about the NC1020 compared to earlier ProLiant server Gigabit NIC products?
A3. The NC1020 differs from other ProLiant NC-series copper Gigabit NICs because it is a basic server NIC. It is PCI based and offers no jumbo frames support and has less memory (only 64KB). It is targeted for use with the ProLiant 100 and 300 series of servers, only. As a basic NIC, it can be offered at a very attractive, low price.

Q4. In what type of bus slots can the NC1020 be used?
A4. It is a 32-bit, 33/66 MHz NIC and is specified to run in either 33 or 66MHz slots. If customers want to put it into 64-bit, 66/100/133Mhz slots; then they can do so with the potential for performance degradation.

Q5. With what certifications does the NC1020 comply?
A5. The NC1020 complies with the following:
  • FCC (U.S. only) Class B
  • DOC (Canada) Class B
  • CE EN 55024, EN55022 Class B
  • VCCI Class II
  • UL 1950
  • EN 60950
  • CE
  • ACPI 1.1a
  • PCI 2.3
  • MicroSoft WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) driver certifications
Q6. Can the NC1020 be teamed for Network Fault Tolerance and Load Balancing with other server adapters and modules supported on ProLiant servers?
A6. The NC1020 can be configured to work with other NC-series Ethernet server adapters supported on ProLiant servers, when running under Microsoft Windows, Linux, or NetWare operating systems. If Large Send Offload (LSO) is enabled, the NC1020 can only team in MicroSoft Operating Systems with another NC1020 or a NC7761. If LSO is disabled, the NC1020 can team with all of HP ProLiant NC-Series NICs without problems.

Q7. What operating systems does the NC1020 support?
A7. Operating system support for the NC1020 includes:
  • Windows Server 2003, 2003 Datacenter, 2003 Web Edition, 2003 Small Business Server
  • Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Datacenter
  • Microsoft certified miniport and teaming drivers
  • Red Hat Linux 8.0, 7.3, 7.2, Enterprise Advanced Server 3 and 2.1, Enterprise Server 3 and 2.1

  • NDIS 2 for DOS unattended operating system install (43K or less in size)
  • management agents for all of the above, except for FreeBSD and DOS
Q8. What management solutions are available for the NC1020?
A8. The NC1020 supports the HP Insight software, including:
  • SmartStart - intelligent integration tool that simplifies the process of installing and configuring ProLiant systems.
  • Insight Manager - comprehensive systems management tools designed to provide proactive and industry leading predicative fault and performance management.
Q9. Where can I get the NC1020?
