Overview

The HP NC6770 PCI-X Gigabit Server Adapter is HP's first fiber-optic networking solution to combine Gigabit Ethernet speed with PCI-X bus technology. The HP NC6770 is a single port Gigabit adapter that supports 1000Mbps speed. Along with other the advanced features that ProLiant customers have come to expect, the HP NC6770 includes support for network failover and load balancing, PCI hot plug capability, Jumbo Frames, Dual Address Cycles (DAC), large "send" offload capability, and Pre-boot Execution Environment (PXE).

What's new

  • 64-bit/133MHz data path for higher throughput and lower CPU utilization
  • Added performance advantage with PCI-X support, backward compatible with existing PCI systems.
  • 96KB onboard memory
  • Support for Pre-boot Execution Environments (PXE)
  • Large "send" offload capability

Ideal environment

Large customers whose enterprise installations are suffering network bottlenecks
Problems and Requirements
  • Require Gigabit speed over fiber to sustain high performance between servers and/or networked power users
  • Looking for PCI-X throughput to meet networking demands
  • Demand manageability across multiple sites.
Typical Use
  • Server-to-server backbone connections at 1000Mpbs
  • Server to high-performance workstations
Solving the Customer Problem

The HP NC6770 PCI-X Gigabit Server Adapter solves customer problems by bringing near-wire speed performance to fiber-optic cabling plants, thereby allowing customers to protect their investment in a fiber-optic infrastructure. Furthermore, the increased capability of the NC6770's PCI-X data path helps to remove network bottlenecks in even the most congested networks.

Large and mid-size installations that want to deploy fiber-optic products across their enterprise
Problems and Requirements
  • The wiring plant in many organizations is Category 5 twisted-pair cabling, which has significant distance limitations
  • Fiber-optic cabling is preferred to twisted-pair cabling in order to increase security and EMI protection
  • Companies want to reduce network complexity by making fiber optic cabling standard in server environments.
Typical Use
  • Server-to-server and/or server-to-switch connections at 1000Mpbs, often over distance exceeding 100 meters.
Solving the Customer Problem

The HP NC6770 PCI-X Gigabit Server Adapter allows ProLiant customers to easily move from twisted-pair to fiber-optic cabling. This decision is typically motivated by the need to support greater distances, the desire for greater security, or for EMI protection in noisy environments, e. g. manufacturing plants. Some customers want to future-proof their environment by deploying fiber-optic cabling to support Ethernet Gigabit speeds rather than use copper wiring for their Ethernet Gigabit requirements.
