Answers

General
Q1. What is the NC7170?
A1. The NC7170 is a 10/100/1000Mps server adapter that has been designed, developed, and tested to meet the needs of ProLiant server customers. The NC7170 supports the PCI v2.2 and PCI-X v1.0 standards, delivers PCI-X bus-mastering technology, and ships with support for all major network operating systems.

Q2. What are the standard features of the NC7170?
A2. The standard features of the NC7170 include:
  • IEEE 802.3ab (Gigabit specification for twisted-pair), IEEE 802.3x (flow control), 802.1Q (VLAN tagging), 802.3p (packet priority), and 802.3ad (link aggregation, static mode configuration only)
  • PCI-X 64-bit/133MHz interface
  • 128KB onboard memory
  • Wake-on-LAN (port #1)
  • Dual Address Cycles (DAC)
  • Pre-boot Execution Environment (PXE)
  • Advanced server features such as: PCI Hot-plug, Network Fault Tolerance, Transmit Load Balancing, and Switch-assisted Load Balancing
Q3. What's new about the NC7170 compared to earlier ProLiant server Gigabit NIC products?
A3. The new features that the NC7170 offers that are not included with previous copper Gigabit NIC products are:
  • Dual ports
  • 128KB onboard memory
  • Intel's latest 82546EB Gigabit controller
Q4. What is the advantage of using a PCI-X server adapter with64-bit/133MHz support?
A4. A server adapter with a faster clock speed will have better performance than one with a slower clock speed because it moves data off the PCI bus faster, thereby reducing CPU utilization and freeing the bus for other purposes.

Q5. What is the theoretical maximum throughput of the NC7170?
A5. Each port on the NC7170 is capable of 1000Mbps, giving each port a theoretical maximum throughput of 1066MBps (Megabytes per second).

Q6. Can the NC7170 be used in standard 64/66, 64/33, and 32/33 PCI slots?
A6. Yes, a customer's hardware investment is protected by the NC7170 being compatible with existing PCI architecture. Performance of the NC7170 in PCI slots will be limited to the maximum throughput allowed by conventional PCI slots.

Q7. With what certifications does the NC7170 comply?
A7. The NC7170 complies with the following:
  • FCC (U.S. only) Class B
  • DOC (Canada) Class B
  • CE EN 55024, EN55022 Class B
  • VCCI Class II
  • UL 1950
  • CSA 950
  • EN 60950
  • CE
  • ACPI 1.1a
  • PCI 2.2
  • PCI-X 1.0
  • MicroSoft WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs)
Q8. Can the NC7170 be teamed for Network Fault Tolerance and Load Balancing with other server adapters and modules supported on ProLiant servers?
A8. The NC7170 can be configured to work with any other NC-series Ethernet server adapters supported on ProLiant servers, when running under Microsoft Windows, Linux, or NetWare.

Q9. What operating systems does the NC7170 support?
A9. Operating system support for the NC7170 includes:
  • Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000
  • Linux: selected Red Hat and SuSE distributions, plus United Linux
  • Novell NetWare 4.2, 5.x, and 6.x
  • SCO (Caldera) OpenUnix 8 and OpenServer 5 (after announcement)
  • MS DOS Client for unattended operating system install
Q10. What management solutions are available for the NC7170?
A10. The NC7170 supports the HP Insight software, including:
  • SmartStart - intelligent integration tool that simplifies the process of installing and configuring ProLiant systems.
  • Insight Manager - comprehensive systems management tools designed to provide proactive and industry leading predicative fault and performance management.
Q11. Where can I get the NC7170?
A11. The NC7170 is available on its announcement date and can be ordered through any standard channel partner, directly from HP (NA only), by telephone or through the Internet at hp.com.

Q12. What is the warranty on the NC7170?
A12. The NC7170 carries a standard ProLiant option warranty maximum of the remaining warranty of the HP product in which it is installed (to a maximum three-year, limited warranty). The minimum is a one-year limited warranty.
