Environmental leadership

Designing energy solutions for today, so there is a tomorrow
  • Reductions from coal consumption to carbon emissions: HP is executing a comprehensive and holistic strategy to help customers take a proactive role in reducing the environmental impact of their business technology - which HP scientists estimate consumes 415 million tons of coal per year with 864 million tons of CO2 greenhouse emissions.
  • Policy influence to create positive change: Through collaboration, joint research and participation in a variety of industry consortium and regulatory agencies, including the EPA, Green Grid, DOE labs, ASHRAE and more, HP is helping to influence environmental policy.
  • Accurate measurement of impact and efficiency: HP Labs is creating and delivering factual and objective approaches to measuring the impact and gauging the efficiency of business technology, including implementation of a Power Usage Effectiveness ratio to gauge technology power usage vs. heat generation.
Leading the way to sustainable computing
  • Setting an example and replicating success: HP is also reducing the environmental impact of its own operations, reducing on-site greenhouse gas emissions by 31% in 2006 and purchasing over 11 million kWh of renewable energy. HP continually increase the energy efficiency of its global operations - and show other how as well
  • Technology supply chain leverage: As one of the world's largest providers of information technology, HP is working closely with its suppliers throughout its value chain to help drive greater energy efficiency and cost savings for the industry and its customers.
  • Environmental leadership through scientific advancement: We want to help our customers take a leadership role in environmental responsibility. Energy-wise computing is an important and strategic priority for HP, including the efforts of HP labs and engineering that have resulted in over 1,000 patents specifically related to power and cooling innovations.
Recycling and preserving the world's natural resources on a global scale
  • Recycling made easy: With HP, we'll make recycling your technology simple. As one of the first companies to drive recycling initiatives for technology, we've created recycling centers around the world that have led to recycling of 920 million pounds globally, with a goal of recycling 1 billion cumulative pounds by 2007.
  • Materials reduction initiatives: Through innovations such as Factory Express, product trade-in and asset recovery services, HP is driving significant reductions in materials consumption and waste byproducts for ourselves and our customers. In 2006 alone, HP recovered and recycled more than 10.4 million pounds of plastics.
  • Global reach and scale of influence: HP has a long, rich heritage of environment responsibility that continues today and into the future. We're committed to using our expertise in this arena to help our customers and the technology industry take leadership roles in protecting our environment on a global scale.
