Answers

General
Q1. What does the "p" mean in the DL360 G4p name?
A1. The "p" means performance and indicates that this DL360 G4 model has performance optimized processors and memory.

The DL360 G4p utilized a higher performance Intel Xeon processor with 2MB L2 cache and faster memory 400 MHz DDR2 memory technology. The G4 is the price/performance optimized model utilizing Intel Xeon processors with 1MB L2 cache and 333MHz DDR memory technology.

Q2. What are the differences between the DL360 G4 and the DL360 G4p?
A2. The DL360 G4 and G4p are built upon the same architecture with many similarities. Both DL360 G4 and G4p utilize the same chipset, storage, management, and networking technologies. The new DL360 G4p models have incorporated 400MHz DDR2 memory technology, two additional SDRAM slots (6 total), and Intel's Xeon processor technology with 2MB L2 cache for increased performance.

Customers who wish to get the best performance from their DL360 should choose the G4p models. Customers who want the best price:performance should choose the G4 models.

Q3. Where can I get detailed information about the DL360 G4 and DL360 G4p specifications and available models?
A3. The DL360 G4 and DL360 G4p QuickSpecs include specifications, descriptions of all models of the ProLiant DL380 G4 and an extensive list of supported options from HP.

Q4. What operating systems are supported on the ProLiant DL360 G4/G4p?
A4. Operating system support includes:
  • Microsoft Windows 2000
  • Microsoft Windows 2003
  • Novell® NetWare®
  • LINUX® (Red Hat®, SuSE®, United)
  • Solaris
For a complete and up-to-date listing of supports OS's and versions, please visit our OS Support Matrix.

Processor and memory
Q1. What is the base memory in the DL360 G4/G4p systems?
A1. Most G4 models ship with a single 1GB DIMM installed and has three additional slots available. Most G4p models ship with 1GB (2 x 512MB) and have four additional available slots.

When upgrading memory DIMMs must be installed in matching pairs for 2:1 interleaving will automatically run. For the DL360 G4, DDR PC2700 DIMMs are available as single DIMMs and a second DIMM must be installed to take advantage of 2:1 interleaving technology. The DL360 G4p comes standard with two DIMMs and interleaving technology is active. Please see the DL360 G4 Quickspecs for additional information.
Q2. What is EM64T?
A2. Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) extends IA-32 computing to 64-bit. 64-bit extension technology enhances next generation IA-32 server platforms with 64-bit addressability and related instructions.

Q3. What processor cache is available on the new Xeon processors?
A3. There are two Intel Xeon processor families for the DL360 G4 and G4p. Processors with 1MB L2 cache are available for the DL360 G4 models. Processors with 2MB L2 cache are available for the DL360 G4p models. The L2 cache is located on die, storing commonly used data closer to the processor. In addition, L2 cache is clocked at the same rate as the processor core, so as faster processors speeds are released, the L2 cache speed increases correspondingly.

Cache memory on the processor chip is faster than main memory. It allows frequently accessed data to be available to the processors with less waiting. Both larger available caches, and more levels of cache, improve performance by reducing the time to fetch the data. In addition, larger processor cache reduces the average number of cache misses, further enhancing performance.

A larger processor cache means the system can be used in CPU intensive environments such as databases applications that must access specific data multiple times in order to complete a calculation.

Q4. Can I use the Xeon processors from the DL380 G4, ML370 G4, or DL350 G4 in the DL360 G4/G4p?
A4. No, the DL360 G4/G4p uses a different heat sink than the DL380 G4, ML370 G4 or ML350 G4. This heat sink is designed specifically for the space constrained system layout of the DL360 G4.

Q5. Can I use the memory from any other server in the DL360 G4/G4p?
A5. Yes, the DL360 G4p uses the same DDR2 PC3200 memory used in the DL380 G4, ML370 G4, and ML350 G4p. The DL360 G4 uses the same DDR PC2700 memory used in the ML350 G4.

Q2. Does HP offer racking solutions for my ProLiant DL360 G4/G4p in Telco and Third Party Racks?
A2. Yes, the DL360 G4/G4p slide out rail system provides tool-free support for racks with square or round mounting holes (including HP/Compaq 10000, 9000. 7000 and HP series), with an adjustment range of 24" - 36".

Installation into Telco racks requires a 3rd party option.

Q3. What rack options are available for the DL360 G4/G4p?
A3. Two rack options are available to address the challenges of cable management for a 1U server. An optional ambidextrous cable management arm can be attached to the rack rail. Cables from the server are set inside the arm, significantly improving in rack servicing.

For out of rack servicing, optional PDU extension bars have been designed specifically for a 1U server. These PDU's have shortened power cords already attached to the PDU. This significantly reduces the cable bulk from power cords, especially when running redundant power in the server. To service the system, simply unplug the shortened power cables and remove the service from the rack.

Q3. Can the internal or front external USB port on the DL360 G4/G4p be used as a boot device or floppy replacement?
A3. Utilities are now available that allow the use of USB instead of floppy for a number of tasks, including system boot from USB drive key. For additional information, view the HP Drive Key Boot Utility whitepaper.
Q4. What are the system health LEDs used for? What do the different colors mean (green, red, amber)?
A4. The front panel and internal LEDs are used to help diagnose a server failure. When an internal component fails, the indication is made on an internal component LED (amber) and on the front panel. If the item is serviceable without removing the server hood, as in the case of a redundant power supply failure, the External Health LED will illuminate. If the item is serviceable by removing the hood, as in the case of a fan failure, the Internal Health LED will illuminate.

If no failures have occurred, the system health LEDs will be green. If a failure has occurred, but a redundant feature has enabled the system to continue running, the LED will be amber. If the failure is critical and is/has caused the system to shutdown, the LED will be red. These LEDs serve as local indicators for several failure conditions. Insight Manager will continue to report these, and many other failure conditions, as well.
