Q1. What is ProLiant Essentials?
A1. ProLiant Essentials is a set of software from Compaq that in combination with Compaq ProLiant Servers enables the build out of an adaptive infrastructure.

Q2. What is the difference between Adaptive Infrastructure and ProLiant Essentials?
A2. Adaptive Infrastructure is Compaq's Vision for an IT infrastructure that enables a customers business to thrive by adapting to a changing business environment, conserving valuable human and technology resources and responding to ever increasing customer demands. ProLiant Essentials is the software from Compaq that is architected for an adaptive infrastructure. ProLiant Essentials software is a set of deliverables we offer to help customers achieve the vision.

Q3. What is the ProLiant Essentials Foundation Pack?
A3. The Foundation Pack contains the essential software that can be used by all customers to form the foundation of their adaptive infrastructure. It ships standard with every ProLiant server and includes the setup, management, and support tools Compaq provides today to simplify the configuration and operation of ProLiant servers. Formerly, these tools were provided in the Server Setup & Management kit included with the server.

Q4. How many Foundation Packs will you have?
A4. In general, just one. Note that some ProLiant server families might include more tools as part of their Foundation Pack. For example, the new ProLiant BL series includes evaluation licenses for the Rapid Deployment Pack.

Q5. What are ProLiant Essentials Value Packs?
A5. Value Packs provide new, optional software offerings that selectively extend the functionality of an adaptive infrastructure to address specific customer business problems and needs. The current selection of ProLiant Essentials Value Packs includes:
  • Integrated Lights-Out Advanced Pack - Enables the advanced capabilities of the integrated Lights-Out processor shipping in the ProLiant DL360 G2, ProLiant 580 G2 and future servers.
  • Rapid Deployment Pack - An integrated Compaq and Altiris solution that automates the process of deploying and provisioning server software, enabling companies to quickly and easily adapt to changing business demands.
  • Workload Management Pack - Includes Resource Partition Manager Version 1.1, which provides easier management of complex environments, improving overall server utilization and enabling Windows 2000 customers to confidently deploy multiple applications on a ProLiant server.
Q6. How many Value Packs will you have?
A6. Compaq has plans for a number of Value Packs today and will look to deliver others based on customer demand. We will focus delivery in the four areas of the Adaptive Infrastructure blueprint: Virtual Presence & Control, Automated Systems and Provisioning, Intelligent Fault Resilience, and Dynamic Resource Scaling.

Q7. Does this mean you intend to charge for all new software from now on?
A7. Absolutely not. Compaq's roadmap includes the addition of many new utilities plus substantial updates to tools in the Foundation Pack. For example, Compaq Insight Manager 7 represents 10 years of continual enhancements to overall server manageability, leveraging numerous hardware advances and evolving software standards for which Compaq has played a leading role in the industry. We intend to continue enhancing Insight Manager and other Foundation Pack offerings as we always have and accelerating our leadership in providing customer value "in the box".

Q8. How are customers reacting to the news that you are charging for Compaq Insight Manager now?
A8. Compaq is not charging for Insight Manager. It remains part of the Foundation Pack that ships standard with every ProLiant.

Q9. How do I purchase ProLiant Essentials software?
A9. Compaq will be selling ProLiant Essentials Value Packs worldwide, through all of our normal sales channels.

Q10. How is the ProLiant Essentials software licensed?
A10. The majority of ProLiant Essentials software products will be licensed per server. Compaq will be using license keys, included in the particular Value Pack, to activate the software.

Q11. Can I get a volume or site license?
A11. Compaq is developing a strategy for volume licensing of ProLiant Essentials software. Until it becomes available, please contact your account manager or sales representative for any specific volume licensing needs.

Q12. Can I purchase a maintenance or service agreement from Compaq for ProLiant Essentials software?
A12. Yes. The software products included in the Value Packs will have their own specific service offerings and CarePaqs. Compaq Global Services can also tailor a custom service agreement to meet any particular customer business need and quality of service level.

Q13. Are there differences in how I get ProLiant Essentials software across the ML, DL, and BL product families?
A13. In general, no. The Foundation Pack comes standard with every server and is delivered in the server box Some additional tools, such as partner integration modules and the SmartStart Scripting Toolkit, can also be downloaded for free from the Compaq website. Refer to www.compaq.com/manage for more information. Value Packs can be ordered through normal Compaq sales channels and will typically be provided in their own separate package.

Q14. Will Value Packs be offered preinstalled?
A14. Depending on the server product, Compaq may selectively preinstall ProLiant Essentials Value Packs. For example, the BL servers will ship with Integrated Lights-Out Advanced features already enabled. Customers can also use Compaq custom installation services to have specific products installed, as they desire.

Q15. Isn't ProLiant Essentials just a rebranding of existing software?
A15. Actually, it's a combination of the latest, enhanced Compaq software tools and technologies along with the introduction of several new tools to enable customers to fully build out and exploit the advantages of adaptive infrastructures.

Q16. Is ProLiant Essentials just a rebranding of another vendor's software product, such as Altiris?
A16. No. Compaq is leveraging its own broad software engineering expertise in addition to partnering with key software providers, such as Altiris, in order to deliver the richest, most comprehensive ProLiant Essentials family of products and maximize the customer value of every ProLiant server. All ProLiant Essentials software products will leverage the full capabilities of the server, which generally will not be the case with "generic" versions of third party software.

Q17. Will ProLiant Essentials software run on Microsoft Windows operating systems only?
A17. Compaq is developing ProLiant Essentials software across the variety of operating systems supported on ProLiant servers.

Q18.How much revenue do you expect ProLiant Essentials to generate?
A18. Compaq does not comment on revenues for specific products or product lines.
