U320 will replace U160 as the standard parallel SCSI interface throughout the year 2003. U320 offers faster access to data and is backward compatible to U2 and U3 providing a clear upgrade path, ease of integration into existing systems, investment protection and a lower total cost of ownership.

Ultra320 technology is backward compatible to Ultra3 and Ultra2. When mixing and matching different interface speeds, the Ultra320 products will operate at the lowest speed in the system. For example, when mixing U320 and U3 drives in an external array with a U3 controller, all drives will operate at the Ultra3 speed of the controller. To attain maximum transfer rates of up to 320 MB/s with U320 technology all components must be Ultra320 capable - the drives, the controller or SCSI adapter, and, if external to the server, the enclosure I/O modules as well.

As with the Ultra3 interface generation of host bust adapters, the HP Ultra320 HBA is optimized for use in ProLiant servers. The firmware enhancements and BIOS upgrades offer such items as Smart LUN Scan, Multi-initiator configuration menu, EV Support, and Drive capacity displays in the BIOS banner.

The same chipset used for the stand-up card will be used for the embedded server solution. This will allow for an easy transition for customers who wish to upgrade drives or tape devices from current generation servers to future generation servers that offer Ultra320 embedded options. |
