The
naming scheme for the Smart Array family is quite simple. Mainstream array
controllers have four numerals while entry-level controllers have three
numerals. The first numeral refers to the product family or generation
among the Smart Array family of products. The second numeral refers to
the protocol (1=Ultra SCSI; 2=Ultra2; 3=Ultra3). The third numeral can
be used for differentiation - For example, the SA-4250ES, the third numeral
indicates that this is a different controller than the SA-4200. The last
number is a placeholder. For example, ES is an indication of special controllers
designed specifically for the cable-free environment of Compaq's ProLiant-6000,
7000 and 8000 servers.
