| Q1. |
What is being Announced? |
| A1. |
The new RSO (Recovery Server Option) Software kit, as part of the Insight software Value Pack Offering. |
|
| Q2. |
What is RSO? |
| A2. |
RSO is a software package that is part of the Insight software Value Pack offering. RSO (Recovery Server Option) allows two servers to act in an active-standby mode. The recovery server will initialize once the active server has failed.
|
|
| Q3. |
How does RSO work? |
| A3. |
RSO is a software package that allows two servers to act in an active-standby mode connected through a shared storage enclosure called Smart Array Cluster Storage. The standby server will initialize once it has detected that a fatal failure occurred on the active server. |
|
| Q4. |
Does RSO protect only against hardware failure? |
| A4. |
No. RSO will also protect against operating system fatal failures. |
|
| Q5. |
What are the system requirements for RSO? |
| A5. |
The system requirements are: two identical ProLiant servers, a Smart Array Cluster Storage, two Smart Array 532 controllers (or an embedded Smart Array 5i or 5i+) for host connectivity. You will also require the RSO CD.
Please refer to the server compatibility matrix for the latest information on RSO server compatibility. |
|
| Q6. |
Do the servers have to be identical? |
| A6. |
Yes, the two servers must be identical in part number for RSO to function properly. Other configurations may work, but these have not been tested nor are supported. |
|
| Q7. |
Can I use legacy ProLiant servers? |
| A7. |
No. Legacy servers cannot be used. RSO will only operate appropriately the servers listed on the RSO server compatibility matrix. |
|
| Q8. |
How long does it take for the standby server to Failover? |
| A8. |
The Failover occurs as soon as the fault is detected. Initialization of the recovery server depends on the following:
- the response time selected when you first installed RSO,
- the server you have selected,
- the processor speed,
- the Operating System, and
- the application.
|
|
| Q9. |
What OS can I use with RSO? |
| A9. |
RSO may be used with a variety of Operating Systems, including operating systems from Microsoft, Novell, and Linux. Please refer to http://www.hp.com/products/sharedstorage for the latest operating system matrix information. |
|
| Q10. |
Which ProLiant Servers can I use with RSO? |
| A10. |
There are several, please refer to the latest ProLiant Server compatibility matrix. |
|
| Q11. |
Can I use the DL380 G2 Packaged Cluster? |
| A11. |
Yes, this is an excellent choice given the popularity of the DL380 G2 server and the ease of purchasing all the required hardware with only one part number. |
|
| Q12. |
How do I configure RSO? |
| A12. |
Configuring RSO to work for ProLiant servers is easy and intuitive. It is accomplished through ORCA (Online RAID Configuration Utility), by selecting options from easy drop down menus. It only takes a few minutes to configure RSO. |
|
| Q13. |
Can I use a JBOD or the RA4100 as the shared storage component? |
| A13. |
No, the only shared storage enclosure that may be used is the Smart Array Cluster Storage. |
|
| Q14. |
What is the warranty for RSO? |
| A14. |
HP will replace defective delivery media replacement for a period of one year (12 months) following the license date of purchase.
Startup technical software support is available for no additional charge by calling HP Support up to 90 days from the date of purchase. Phone support to assist customers with installation, set-up, and questions pertaining to the canned scripts and respective usages are supported. View worldwide numbers for HP Support. |
|
| Q15. |
How do I know RSO is active? |
| A15. |
RSO will place an icon on the desktop tray indicating the current status of RSO. |
|
| Q16. |
What number do I call to purchase an RSO license? |
| A16. |
If inside the US call HP at 1.800.888.5858 or visit http://www.hp.com/products/sharedstorage. If outside the US contact your local HP reseller. |
|
| Q17. |
If I am not in the US, how do I order an RSO license? |
| A17. |
You may contact your local HP reseller or visit us at www.hp.com/products/sharedstorage.
|
| Q18. |
Do I need to purchase two licenses for my OS and applications? |
| A18. |
That depends on your licensing agreement with the operating system and application vendors. Please refer to your EULA (End User Licensing Agreement) for the operating system and each application.
|
|
| Q19. |
How many RSO licenses do I need to purchase? |
| A19. |
Only one license of RSO is required per server pair.
|
|
| Q20. |
Does RSO work with non-cluster aware applications? |
| A20. |
Yes, RSO does not require cluster applications or operating systems to be cluster aware. This is a great solution for custom applications that are not capable of being clustered.
|
|
| Q21. |
What new RSO licensing options are available? |
| A21. |
Two new licensing options are provided. A flex node option and a Master License Agreement (MLA) option. The flex node option simplifies ordering and license fulfillment by enabling HP customers to purchase a license key for the exact quantity of nodes or servers desired with one fulfillment kit with the RSO CD. The second option is the MLA licensing option. This is another option designed to simplify the licensing and fulfillment of Insight software. This option provides the customer with the ability to order a key for the quantity desired and then purchase a license (a material-less SKU) for each node deployed over time.
