High speed graphics performance

The HP IP Console Switch provides near real time KVM/IP console performance allowing you to manage remote servers simply and easily.

The IP Console solution is operating system and hardware independent so multiple server types and different operating systems can be managed from a single high performance remote console.

Microsoft Active Directory Service Integration

The optional integration with Microsoft Active Directory via the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) allows centralized administration of KVM User IDs, passwords and access rights. The HP IP Console uses a simple, flexible method of integrating KVM users and rights into the directory service without requiring a directory schema extension. To match varying customer requirements the HP IP Console Directory Services Integration can use one of several modes to manage the user IDs, passwords and KVM access rights.
  • Authenticate Only Mode - In authenticate only mode only the user ID and password is authenticated via LDAP against the directory. If the LDAP authentication is successful the KVM access rights will checked inside the switch. This mode allows the centralized management of user IDs and passwords without requiring any changes to the directory.
  • User Attribute Mode - This provides simple management of access rights with the directory. Users are again authenticated against the directory via LDAP. If successful the directory will return a user attribute, either a KVM User or a KVM Administrator. KVM Users have console access to all servers but do not have administrative rights to KVM Switches. KVM Administrators have console access to all servers and Administrator access to all KVM switches. This mode is ideal for smaller installations with a limited number of administrators.
  • Group Attribute Mode - Group Attribute Mode allows complete control of KVM access rights within the directory. By setting up groups containing Users, Servers and KVM Switches, within the directory, access rights can be defined so that individual users only have access to specific servers and administrators can only access specific switches. For example in an enterprise environment groups could be setup to only allow Linux Administrators to access Linux servers and Windows Administrators to access the Windows servers.
Purchasing HP IP Console Switch Directory Services Integration The HP IP Console Directory Services Integration is purchased as a license key that can be installed on the HP IP Console Switch that has the latest firmware. The part number for a single license is 370585-B21. Flexible License Packs and Master Licenses are also available. For more information on licensing please refer to the Insight software Licensing page.

HP IP Console Viewer included as standard

The HP IP Console viewer software is included as standard with the unit. The IP Console viewer provides an easy and intuitive way to manage and group servers on a remote workstation. Key features of the HP IP Console Viewer software are:
  • Support for Windows® and Linux® consoles
  • Increased scalability over browser-based viewers
  • Multiple security levels
  • Operates across firewalls and VPNs
  • No software to install on attached servers
  • Secure SSL data transfer across network
  • Customizable server information (location, site, names)
  • Customizable views by switch, servers or sites
  • Sort on multiple fields
  • Scan mode to scroll through attached servers without using connection
  • Optional Directory Services Integration via LDAP for enterprise wide authentication
For the local user the built in On Screen Display (OSD) provides an intuitive menu based system for rapidly navigating to the correct server.

Increased efficiency

Increased efficiency, space utilization, and improved cable management throughout your heterogeneous data center.

Using a single network port and IP address the HP IP console switch provides access to up to 256 servers and high performance network access to KVM functionality. Using the HP IP Console Viewer, users can access local KVM functions from their Windows or Linux workstations via a 100 mbps network connection. Two models are available for either 1 remote user and 1 local user or 3 remote users and 1 local user.

Each IP console switch has ports for 16 direct attach servers. Each server requires an interface adapter, either PS/2 or USB to connect the CAT5 cable. For connectivity to up to 256 servers, each of the 16 ports on the IP Console Switch may be tiered or cascaded to an expansion module or the HP Server Console Switch.

Simplified KVM cable management

Simplified KVM cable management and network configuration that easily expands as your data center grows.

The HP IP consoling solution uses unshielded CAT5 cabling between the servers and the switch. The cables can be purchased ready-made or field terminated to create custom lengths. CAT5 cabling provides several benefits-- the smaller, more flexible form factor facilitates routing through the rack and customizable lengths eliminate coils of cabling in the rear of the rack.

The Interface Adapter (IA) that connects from the CAT5 cable to the server KVM ports also provides keep-alive and naming functionality. Keep-alive means that even if the CAT5 cable is disconnected from the switch the IA will still respond as if the keyboard, mouse and video were present, allowing a server reboot to occur without errors. Storing the name in the IA ensures that even if the cables are connected to different ports on the switch or even a different switch the name will follow the server making changes to KVM network configuration simple.
