HP IP console switches provide both local rack console access and network accessibility to KVM functions of attached servers. The switch is available in two models to support either 1 or up to 3 network users and both support one local user. A java applet installed on a Windows or Linux workstation provides network users with high performance KVM access. Users can access applications and screens as if they were standing right in front of the rack. Security for servers is controlled by a database of user names with multiple security levels that is configured and saved on the switch.
The HP IP Console Switch provides keyboard, video and mouse (KVM) connections to 16 direct attached servers. Users can tier this switch with the previous generation of legacy Compaq console switches or new expansion modules to support up to 128 servers (8 servers per switch port). The HP IP Console Switch utilizes CAT5e UTP cables between the switch and server, facilitating cable routing and allowing for field termination of custom cable lengths. An interface adapter is used to convert the server's PS2 connection to RJ45 and the entire solution is compatible with both RiLoe and iLoe environments.
The HP IP Console Switch provides KVM access to any server with standard PS2 keyboard, video and mouse connections allowing a single switch to support a variety of device brands from one local console or over a LAN. The IP console switching solution does not require the installation of any software on the attached servers, allowing users to connect a single switch to servers running a variety of operating systems.

 |
24/7 data centers; staffed remote sites; heterogeneous data centers
Problems and requirements
- medium to large data centers
- desire a mix of local and remote access
- want to move people out of the computer rooms due to cold temperatures and noise, but still need local access
- require increased density of servers per switch
- somewhat price sensitive to cost per port
Typical use
24/7 data centers
- The IP Console Switch enables staffed data centers to move people out of computer rooms while still maintaining server accessibility. Technicians can load the IP console viewer on their local workstation at a desk or cubicle and access the servers in the computer room through a LAN/WAN connection.
staffed remote sites
- The IP Console Switch provides users with access to local KVM functions over their network. Remote users can access servers and perform actions as if they are standing at a local console.
heterogeneous environment
- The IP Console Switch connects to any type of server that has a standard PS2 keyboard, video and mouse connections. Additionally, servers can be running any operating system-- there is no software or hardware to install on attached servers.
Solving the customer problem
Data centers are increasingly plagued by problems associated with a high density of devices. Large numbers of devices require increased time spent on cable management. Not only are there more products to monitor and manage, but environmental issues, such as extreme cold and noise, make computer rooms unpleasant working environments for system technicians.
- The HP IP Console Switch offers very high performance network access to KVM functions, allowing IT administrators to be in cubicles or offices outside the data center while still maintaining local KVM control over the servers.
- CAT5e cabling provides a smaller, easier to route form factor than traditional KVM cabling and lengths can be customized to eliminate coils of cables in the back of the rack.
- The HP IP console switch can access up to 128 servers per switch allowing data centers to manage a lower total number of console switches while saving valuable rack real estate.
- The HP IP Console Switch is SNMP-manageable and requires only one IP address to control LAN/WAN access to up to 128 servers..
