Q1. How does the HP BladeSystem Cat5 KVM Interface Adapter connect to a HP BladeSystem Server?
A1. The The interface adapter connects to the front SUVI diagnostics port on the front of individual HP BladeSystem BL servers.

Q2. Which server is the HP BladeSystem Cat5 KVM Interface Adapter compatible with?
A2. The HP BladeSystem Cat5 KVM Interface Adapter is compatible with BL20G2, BL25, BL30, BL35, BL40 and BL45 BladeSystem Servers.

General
Q1. Where can I find more detailed information on the features and specifications of the HP server Console Switch?
A1. The HP Server Console Switch Quickspecs include descriptions of all models of the HP IP Console Switch and a list of supported options from HP.

Q2. Can I use this switch with any device?
A2. This switch can be used with any sever that uses a standard PS/2 or USB connection for mouse and keyboard and has a VGA connector for video

Serial connections for Network Devices, Linux Servers and Unix servers are also supported with the Serial Interface Adapter.

Q3. What security features are available to secure KVM and serial console access?
A3. Strong Password (alpha-numeric, more than 5 characters) on the local OSD screensaver. If the user enters an incorrect password, access will not be granted and a error message will be generated.

Q4. What are the supported On-Screen display (OSD) languages?
A4. English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, and Japanese (EFIGSD+J).

Q5. What are the restrictions on cable distances in relation to video performance?
A5.
  • 1- 50 ft 1280×1024 @ 85Hz
  • 1- 75 ft 1024×768 @ 85 Hz
  • 1- 100 ft 800×600 @85 Hz

Q1. How many levels of tiering are supported?
A1. One tier is supported. Note that an Expansion Module is considered a tier as is connecting to another KVM switch.

Q2. Can I tier this switch with any KVM or Console Switch?
A2. No, must be a legacy Compaq Server Console Switch or the HP IP Console Switch.

Q3. Can I remotely upgrade my switch and interface adapters if I am connected to an HP IP Console Switch?
A3. No, not at this time. This feature is being evaluated for the next product update.

Q4. What rack mounting options are available to mount the HP KVM switch in the rack?
A4.
  • 0U Mounting - Vertical mount on side of rack
  • 1U Mounting - Behind: HP 1U keyboard drawer or TFT5600 Keyboard/monitor drawer, or TFT5110 Monitor
Q5. What restrictions are there on the Serial Interface Adapter?
A5. The serial interface adapter supports a maximum baud rate of 115kbits/sec with hardware flow-control enabled or 56kbits/sec with software flow-control. Note to ensure correct operation either hardware or software flow-control must be enabled on both the Serial IA and the connected device.

There is no support for file transfers, scripts, serial interface logging or detecting specific characters or strings. The Serial IA takes serial data and converts into VGA and KB signals for processing by the HP Server Console Switch.

Service and support
Q1. How do I perform a firmware upgrade?
A1. Using an Firmware executable file via a serial download cable connected to another server or laptop, users must update the switch, and then in turn must update the interface adapters.

Q2. Where is the latest FW version located?
A2. The latest version of the firmware will be available on the HP.com.

Q3. Is a diagnostic process available on the switch for troubleshooting problems?
A3. Yes, the diagnostic tool can be found on the main menu of the OSD.

Q4. What do I do if I forget my password?
A4. Users must contact the switch administrator and have them reset the user password. Should the Administrator lose the password, they must contact HP Support and open a 3rd level service ticket in order to receive a fix.

Q5. When tiered below the HP IP Console Switch how do I place the tiered HP KVM Server Switch into free mode in order to have remote access?
A5. There are several choices:
  • Manual - Via the local OSD, users must select the disconnect button on the main OSD screen, or users can press simultaneously "print-screen + alt + 0"
  • Automatic - Users can set the OSD screen saver to free the local user whenever the screensaver is invoked (based on user defined time period of inactivity)
