With the attractive low acquisition cost and high capacity points of SATA drives it is important to understand the appropriate applications where SATA drives should be used. Proper usage of these drives will lessen the probability of drive failure.
- Ideal for non-mission critical, low duty cycle environments
- Reference storage, email archives, enterprise backup and restore systems
- Video archiving and distribution systems
- Server and Storage Multi-Drive Configurations: high capacity low cost servers, JBOD, or RAID
We do not recommend the use of SATA in high IOP's performance intense applications, mission critical applications or extreme environments with increased vibration. For these demanding applications, HP recommends SAS hard drives.
Serial ATA (SATA) offers customers and system builders the lowest acquisition cost by leveraging the volume of the desktop market, and adding entry level functionality such as hot plug. The following features are also available on the large capacity 250, 500 and 750GB SATA drives.
- Improved rotational vibration robustness for immunity to rotational affects
- Native Command Queuing (NCQ) for increased performance (500 and 750GB capacities only)
