» Podcast: Next generation of SATA drives

Overview

HP is introducing the first in a series of solid state drive products. This device, targeted at extreme operation environments or local boot, brings the reliability of solid state technology, lower power and faster reads than traditional rotating drives. The SFF product, based on NAND Single Level Cell flash technology is available on a limited selection of ProLiant server blades.

What's new

Introducing SFF solid state drives in 32GB and 64GB for enterprise ,offering single level cell (SLC) NAND flash devices as a substitute for traditional rotating drives in a boot environment or extreme operating environment
  • Solid State drives have no rotating media and therfore no seek times enabling higher read IOPS. Performance is up to 50x SATA and 15x SAS for random reads
  • Solid State drives are low power (sub 2W) compared to 9W for a 15K SFF SAS generating less heat with no noise
  • Solid State drives can operate in extreme environments of up to 70 degrees C

Ideal environment

Ideal for...

Solid state drives are ideal for use in extreme operating environments

  • Can withstand high temperatures of up to 70 degrees C
  • Shock and vibration tolerant
  • No moving parts means no noise

Solid state drives are ideal as high performance boot drives

  • No seek times
  • Random reads of up to 50X greater than SATA and 15X greater than SAS drives
  • Fast power-on to ready time

Solid State drives are ideal for high random read environments such as web service providers

  • Random reads up to 15x that of SAS hard drives and 50X that of SATA hard drives
  • Lower latency due to no seek times or drive spin up
