Overview

The MSA500 with the addition of this the new 4-port IO Module now gives customers the ability to deploy multi-host shared storage and high availability multipath IO configurations for unprecedented storage value targeted for Remote and Distributed IT deployments. The 4-Port Shared Storage module may be used in one of two primary configurations:
  1. Enhance cluster fault tolerance and IO performance by adding dual paths from the host servers to the shared storage. This provides an additional level of fault tolerance by adding redundancy to both the HBA in the host server as well as the SCSI cables connecting the host servers to the shared storage. This also gives the ability to configure static load balancing between the HBA improving IO performance.
  2. Another configuration possibility that the new 4-port option brings, is to direct attach up to four independent servers to the MSA500. The storage capacity to each server is assigned with SSP (Shared Storage Presentation), a utility that ships standard with the MSA500. Using SSP and sharing storage among multiple host servers maximizes available capacity utilization, and allows for additional hard drive capacity to be deployed on the fly (up to 2 TB or 14 total disk drives) with the online volume extension and online capacity expansion.

What's new

Smart Array Multipath Software version 2.0 is now available with expanded operating system support for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and UnitedLinux 1.0.

Smart Array Multipath Software for Modular Smart Array 500 provides an added level of fault tolerance and performance by adding redundant paths from the host servers to the shared storage. The redundant path reduces the exposure of failed HBA and cables through failover capability. You can also tune IO performance by load balancing OS volumes across the multiple paths.

Current Smart Array Multipath software users can download a free upgrade to version 2.0.

Ideal environment

Remote sites and distributed environments requiring high availability computing: bank branches, retail locations, regional distribution centers, web hosting, and medium sized businesses, engineering workgroups, manufacturing, Telco (Voice over IP).
Problems and Requirements
  • Higher level of availability for remote or distributed environments to minimize downtime
  • Flexible storage capacity expansion with advanced data protection features
  • Simple to deploy solutions based on industry standard technology, configuration and management tools
  • Minimize storage cost through maximizing storage usage capacity utilization and minimizing infrastructure costs
  • Shared storage to maximize storage usage capacity
  • Remote management capability to configure and maintain compute and storage with out onsite staff
Typical Use

  • Smart Array Multipath Software: Customer with a DL380 G2 SCSI cluster using MSA500 follows best practices and decides to eliminate HBA and cables as single points of failure and create a cluster with increased fault tolerance. Installing the 4-Port Module and the Smart Array Multipath software will convert the single path cluster into a multiple path cluster.
  • Direct Attached Shared Storage: Customer in growth mode redeploys current ML370 G2 attaching it to a MSA500 and migrating Universal Hard drives to it. Later the customer adds a 10000 series rack and deploys two servers an ML350 for Mail and Messaging and a DL580 G2 for an ERP solution. Adds 9 36 GB Universal hard drives and uses SSP to assign volumes to each. Deployment is quick and simple, storage utilization has been optimized.
Solving the Customer Problem
  • Hardware failures may create significant downtime leading to revenue loss and customer dissatisfaction. Create two-node clusters with increased fault tolerance by providing dual paths to the shared storage reducing the impact of failed HBA and cables.
  • Simple to configure and deploy, low cost Multipath solution.
  • Deploying independent servers with its own internal storage may leave unused drive capacity in each server. By using the MSA500 as the shared storage component for up to four servers, hard drive capacity is maximized. Migrating hard drives from the ProLiant serves to the MSA500 is simple with DtS technology.
