Overview

Windows HPC Server 2008 (HPCS) is designed specifically to run parallel, high-performance computing (HPC) applications to solve complex computations. Windows HPC Server 2008 accelerates time-to-insight by providing an HPC platform that is simple to deploy, operate, and integrate with existing infrastructure and tools.

HPCS supports leading HPC applications with an integrated software stack that includes Operating System, Job Scheduler, management tools, and MPI layer. It also integrates seamlessly with existing Windows infrastructure (e.g., Active Directory), allowing you to leverage existing skills and technology for system and node management, workload management, user management and security. Developing applications for HPC Server allows developers to leverage their existing Windows-based skills and experience and use familiar development tools such as Visual Studio 2008.

What's new

Windows HPC Server 2008 is an integrated, standards-based compute clustering platform leveraging the power and usability of a Windows 64-bit Server environment. HPCS extends the capabilities of Windows HPC server 2008 with set-up and configuration templates to save you time and effort, and includes a new administration console.
  • Enhanced monitoring, system health and resporting with built-in diagnostic tools, the ability to create and manage groups of resources, and failover options.
  • HPCS is also supported by HP-MPI, which is a high-performance, production-quality implementation of the Message Passing Interface standard by dozens of leading HPC ISVs and offering a standard interface for multiple interconnects.
  • HPCS has been tested on HP Cluster Platform and Cluster Platform Express, which offer the flexibility of a custom solution with the simplicity, reliability and value of a preconfigured, factory-built cluster. Today customers can obtain HPCS directly from Microsoft and confidently install on their Cluster Platform. HP is also planning to offer HPCS directly as a factory-installed option from HP for HP Cluster Platforms.

Ideal environment

Ideal for...

Engineers, Scientists, and Analysts
  • Computer Aided Engineering, Life Sciences, Geo Sciences, and Financial Services
  • Faster time-to-insight through simplified cluster deployment, job submission and status monitoring
Current Windows HPC Customers
  • Development expertise with Windows tools (e.g. Visual Studio)
  • ISV or in-house Windows applications outrunning single system performance capabilities, especially 32-bit memory constraints
Standardized on Windows, especially IT Infrastructure
  • Better integration with existing Windows infrastructure allows customers to leverage existing technology and skill-sets to maximize return on investment
  • Want to spend time working, not doing cluster administrative tasks and programming
