The Windows Server 2003 operating system family as offered by HP includes three products which share core functionality but offer varying levels of features and scalability to address different classes of business solutions. Review the Edition Comparison chart for detailed specifications for each edition.
Enterprise Edition is the Microsoft recommended operating system for servers running applications such as networking, messaging, inventory and customer service systems, databases, and e-commerce Web sites in medium and large enterprises. The major difference from Standard Edition is support for higher-performance, more scalable servers and the ability to cluster servers to handle larger workloads and provide enhanced availability. The new license for Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition will enable customers to run up-to 4 Virtual operating environments per Server license. Visit Microsoft Server Virtual Server 2005 R2 for more information.
Standard Edition is designed for small organizations and departmental use. Standard Edition delivers intelligent file and printer sharing, secure Internet connectivity, centralized desktop application deployment, and Web solutions that connect employees, partners, and customers.
Web Edition is designed for building and hosting Web applications, Web pages, and XML Web services. It delivers a single-purpose solution for Internet service providers, application developers, and others wishing only to use or deploy specific Web functionality rather than a general purpose operating system. Web Edition takes advantage of improvements in Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0, Microsoft ASP.NET, and the Microsoft .NET Framework to deliver a great platform for web applications. There will be no Windows Server 2003 R2 version offered for Web Edition.
