Windows Server 2008 introduces next generation web tools, built-in virtualization technologies, and security and server management enhancements that will help customers more efficiently manage their IT operations, reduce costs and improve performance of business-critical systems.

ProLiant Generation 8 & Windows Server 2008 is supported by HP when utilizing Service Pack 2 only.

Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V, the next-generation hypervisor-based server virtualization technology, is now available for download from the Microsoft Virtualization website. Hyper-V operates under Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter Editions. Hyper-V is not available for Web Server. Hyper-V runs only on Windows Server builds for x64 processors with hardware virtualization support, such as AMD-V or Intel VT processors. What's New

Q1. How do I obtain Microsoft Windows 2008 SP2?
A1. In keeping with HP’s promise for a green IT, HP will only offer this kit for Korean, Japanese and Chinese languages. All other languages can be downloaded from Microsoft’s website http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008sp2. HP will be launching these product part numbers in the near future.
Q2. When and why should I upgrade to Windows Server 2008?
A2. If you are planning on new server purchases where your IT goals and design as well as applications could benefit from these new features, this is a good time to upgrade part of your infrastructure to this new OS. Q3. Will downgrade rights be available for Windows Server 2008?
A3. In your end-user license agreement, Microsoft grants the rights to use any prior version of Windows Server 2008 operating system or your Client Access License in place of the version specified on your Certificate of Authority. You must have an official copy and license of the previous version of the OS before you can execute the downgrade. For details, visit the Windows Server 2008 Downgrade Rights webpage.

Until December 31, 2009, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 products from HP purchased from HP or from HP authorized reseller will include the Windows Server 2003 R2 downgrade media that can be used to install on their server using the Windows Server 2008 license. Windows Server 2008 customers who did not receive their downgrade media, please contact their local customer support. Customers will be required to submit proof of Windows Server 2008 purchase to receive one copy of the downgrade media.
Q4. What are Windows server client access licenses (CAL)?
A4. In a networked environment, clients that require access to the server for functions such as file and print, require a license to that server. The license grants the user, a device or a terminal the right to access that server. For the different types of access, Microsoft provides a user CAL, device CAL and a terminal server CAL. Q5. What is Software Assurance and what does it provide me?
A5. Microsoft Software Assurance is a maintenance offering available for various OS and application products. One primary benefit for Software Assurance is it grants you new version access rights to the next release of the operating system, as long as it was released within the period for which you acquired Software Assurance. A4. HP supports Hyper-V from a ProLiant compatibility as well as offers OEM licensed versions of Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V. ProLiant support for Hyper-V is listed in the OS Support Matrix. Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter OEM versions of Windows Server 2008 is available for purchase with a ProLiant server directly from HP or from your local authorized reseller. These OEM versions currently come with a beta version of hyper-v, however, you can download and install the final released Hyper-V from the Microsoft website with your officially licensed copy of Windows Server 2008. Q1. How can I purchase Windows Server 2008 from HP?
A1. HP sells OEM licenses for Windows Web Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter Edition for ProLiant servers in various languages worldwide. The OEM license must be purchased with the ProLiant server. Review the quickspecs for the complete product offering.
  • OEM licenses are available directly from HP as Preinstalled or Drop-in-the-Box option with your server purchase. Click the Buy Online on this product page to learn more.
  • OEM licenses, known as HP Reseller Option Kits (ROK) are also available from your local authorized reseller. Visit the US Partner Locator page to find a U.S. or worldwide reseller near you. ROK products are subject to OEM license activation. Read below for more information.
  • Microsoft OS and application volume licenses are also available for purchase from HP via Software Licensing and Management Solutions.
Q2. What is included in an OEM license?
A2. Windows Server 2008 from HP includes DVD media for both 32-bit and x64 products, documentation on CD, end-user license agreement, COA - or certificat of authenticity affixed to your server, and 5 client-access licenses.
Q3. Can I buy additional client access licenses?
A3. Yes. You can buy user, device or terminal client licenses either during the time of after your ProLiant server purchase.
Q4. What is OEM license activation?
A4. Microsoft requires activation for various OS and application product licenses. Activation is required for HP ROK products and for all OEM customers who have replaced their motherboards as a result of warranty. Customers will receive an activation alert upon installation of the OS and have 30-days from OS installation to complete the activation. Activation requires the following simple steps below. Q5. What support, services and warranty do I receive with my OEM purchase?
A5. Windows Server 2008 from HP receives the following support, services and warranty.
  • Technical support for installation, setup and configuration is available 90-days from date of purchase.
  • Warranty is available for defective/lost/missing media for 90-days from date of purchase. If replacement media is required beyond the 90-days, please call customer support to learn more about purchasing replacement media.
