Answers
What's new?
Q1. What is Windows Essential Business Server 2008 and its features?
A1. EBS is an integrated, multi-server solution designed for midsize businesses with larger numbers of up to 300 users or more complex IT needs. It combines management, messaging, and security software into one integrated server solution that can dramatically reduce IT complexity and improve business efficiency. Windows EBS 2008 is pre-configured to best practices and can offer substantial discounts compared to licensing the included products individually. It will be available in two editions, Standard and Premium

Q2. Why should I choose Windows Essential Business Server 2008?
A2. EBS is designed and priced for Midsize Businesses. It combines full version software for the operating system, management, messaging and security into an "all in one" integrated solution- delivering out-of-the-box value for midsize businesses. EBS 2008 provides an approx. 30% discount compared to buying the individual components separately. Also, the flexibility to mix standard and premium Client Access Licenses (CALs) helps bring down the cost of ownership for midsize companies. Simplified setup, integrated security with a centralized administration console, EBS provides the tools to allow you to save time and money.

Q3. Will downgrade rights be available for Windows Essential Business Server 2008?
A3. No. Components of the EBS solution cannot be separated. Downgrade rights apply to the solution - that is, if EBS 2008 had an earlier version, then the components that make up that version could be downgraded. However, since EBS 2008 is the first version, there are no applicable downgrade rights. For more details see: Windows Essential Business Server Downgrade Rights

Q4. What are Windows Essential Business Server client access licenses (CAL)?
A4. In a networked environment, clients that require access to the server for functions such as file and print, require a license to that server. The license grants the user, a device or a terminal the right to access that server. For the different types of access, Microsoft provides a user CAL, and device CAL for EBS 2008. In addition there are two types of CALs per edition, one for Standard Edition and another for Premium Edition. For more details, visit: Windows Essential Business Server Licensing Overview.

Q5. What is Software Assurance and what does it provide me?
A5. Microsoft Software Assurance is a maintenance offering available for various OS and application products. One primary benefit for Software Assurance is it grants you new version access rights to the next release of the operating system, as long as it was released within the period for which you acquired Software Assurance. HP SLMS sells software assurance - visit Software Licensing & Management.
