| Q3. |
Will downgrade rights be available for Windows Small Business Server 2008? |
| A3. |
Yes. Microsoft grants the rights to use any prior version of Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2008, regardless of which channel was used to acquire the license. Windows Small Business Server 2008 licenses can be downgraded to use or access older versions of the corresponding licenses. If you obtained your server with Small Business Server preinstalled from a partner or OEM, in order to exercise your downgrade rights you must already have the earlier versions of Small Business Server media available. If you purchased Open Licensing, Volume Licensing, Software Assurance, or purchased the full retail product of SBS 2008, contact Microsoft fulfillment services in your region. | Q4. |
What are Windows Small Business Server client access licenses (CAL)? |
| A4. |
In a networked environment, clients that require access to the server for functions such as file and print, require a license to that server. The license grants the user, a device or a terminal the right to access that server. For the different types of access, Microsoft provides a user CAL, and device for Small Business Server 2008,. With Windows Small Business Server 2008, use of server services does not activate CALs. Instead, businesses choose how CALs will be used based on how the server needs to be accessed on a regular basis. For more details, visit: Windows Small Business Server Licensing Overview.

| Q5. |
If I buy SBS Premium edition from HP, does that mean I have to buy 2 new servers from HP as well? |
| A5. |
No, you are not required to buy new servers beyond the first one with the HP OEM SBS 2008 license purchase. If you currently have a server that meets Windows Certification logo requirements for Windows Server 2008 x64 edition and meets the minimum hardware specifications listed on the Microsoft site, you should feel confident you can re-purpose your server for SBS 2008 Premium.
If however, you plan to downgrade the media on the second server and it is not a HP server, you must obtain the downgrade media from Microsoft since the HP downgrade media is HP BIOS locked. You will need to get the media from the Microsoft website and pay a small fee. This site is scheduled to close after Dec. 31st. Visit this site:
